Meat Man album
$20.25 Billy Price, east coast blue-eyed soul man, has been entertaining audiences for the past three decades. In his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pa., he is an institution. Price's popularity isn't hard to explain. As Geoffrey Himes of the Washington Post has written, "Unlike so many blues revivalists, Price is not an imitation of older, better singers--he's the real thing." Billy Price first attracted national attention during his three-year association with guitarist Roy Buchanan. Price is the vocalist on two of Buchanan's LPs, That's What I'm Here For and Livestock. With Buchanan, Price toured the U.S. and Canada, playing such venues as Carnegie Hall in New York, the Newport Jazz Festival, the Roxy and the Troubadour in Los Angeles, and the Spectrum in Philadelphia. Price assembled Billy Price and the Keystone Rhythm Band in 1977. Before their breakup in 1990, the band recorded four critically acclaimed LPs and developed a reputation as one of the most exciting touring bands in the U.S. Price formed The Billy Price ...

| | Malford Milligan Rides Again... CD (2006)
Meat Man songs
$11.89 Malford Milligan has been belting out his own blend of blues, soul, gospel, funk, and rock & roll from his home base of Austin, TX, for many years, working and recording with a lengthy roster of talent that includes Storyville, Double Trouble, the Boneshakers, Eric Johnson, Sue Foley, and Marcia Ball. Milligan, whose influences range from Joni Mitchell to Al Green and Stevie Wonder, didn't begin releasing albums under his own name until well after he had passed the age of 40. His rendition of Blind Willie Johnson's "Dark Was the Night" set the tone for the album The Gospel According to Austin, Vol. 2 in 2001. Sweet Cherry Soul appeared in 2002 on Stagger Lee Records, No Good Deed Goes Unpunished came out on the Austin to Boston label in 2004, and Rides Again... was released by Mass Appeal in 2006. Rides Again... might just be his best piece of work to date, as maturity gives Malford a leonine quality that works wonders and is bound ...

| | Four Freshmen Stars In Our Eyes/The Swingers CD (2000)
Meat Man songs
$14.55 These two long-players are available on a single CD two-fer from Collectors' Choice Music. Both Stars in Our Eyes and The Swingers were originally issued in 1962 and represent the 15th and 16th studio releases by the vocal quartet during their eight-year -- and counting -- association with Capitol Records. Each title individually contains a dozen tracks that fit into the respective album's concept or motif. Stars in Our Eyes allows the Four Freshmen an opportunity to pay homage to their influences, as well as peers, while The Swingers is a reference to the swing-era jazz numbers included on the album. Although a seemingly obvious idea, the indescribably singular vocal resonance produced by the Four Freshmen -- when coupled with pop standards that have already been hit records in their own right -- is indeed a sure-fire winning combination. Several of the reworkings, especially "Tom Dooley" and "Standing on the Corner," contain highly unique arrangements courtesy of their longtime collaborator, Dick Reynolds. His instinctual knowledge of their vocal blend brings new facets to many of the pop, folk, and jazz standards. Seeing as vocal jazz is the Four Freshmen's niche, The Swingers is an aptly compiled ...

| | Wolf Records 20th Anniversary Collection CD (2003)
Meat Man CD music
$13.25 There's no doubting the quality of blues that Wolf Records has been releasing over the last two decades; what this collection shows is its breadth. From the Delta stylings of Son House, with a superb take on "My Black Mama," to the easier, West Coast feel of Charles Brown, the raw Chicago pump of Muddy Waters on "Hoochie Coochie Man," and even as far as British blues, in the person of Dana Gillespie, the label has indeed covered the waterfront. In addition to the big names, they've also showcased some lesser-known (but equally talented) performers like John Primer and Larry Garner who deserve a wider hearing, certainly on the basis of the tracks included here. Louisiana guitar whiz Garner might be from a younger generation, but the roots of his blues still run deep. Still, it's impossible to deny the power of the old masters -- or even mistresses, as Memphis Minnie is superbly featured on "Hold ...
