A nice idea -- although a better, more eclectic tribute can be found on Rhino's Bo Diddley Beats compilation, released a decade earlier. Hey Bo Diddley: A Tribute! follows in the celebrated '90s tradition of corralling established blues and rock talents and letting them pay homage to their heroes in the studio, often with the help of a common backing band. Unfortunately, Hey Bo Diddley suffers from a serious case of "karaoke syndrome" -- as good as Otis Rush, Taj Mahal, Charlie Musselwhite, and the rest of the gang are, they're seldom able to glue together convincing grooves from the ho-hum, pre-recorded backing tracks. Instead of frantic, muscular Bo Diddley beats to work with, they're provided a tinny, by-the-numbers Bo Diddley pitter-patter. Producer Carla Olson had good intentions, but the results are a mixed bag. With the exception of Corey Harris' slinky reworking of "Crackin' Up," none of the tunes on this album would make the cut for a solo album by any of these artists. Perhaps the real tribute to Diddley is the proof provided by this album that his sound is much harder to master than people would like to think. ~ Ken Chang
Aside from Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley is one of rock's only architects who can claim a style of his own and also have it automatically identified with his own name, a virtual musical trademark. The jumping, syncopated rhythm that he came up with at the dawn of the 1950s is still a large part of what rock & roll is all about, and makes Diddley, in his own way, easily as revolutionary as Berry or Jimi Hendrix. That being said, it's almost bizarre that a tribute album hadn't already been arranged before this one. Though Quicksilver Messenger Service's Happy Trails is all but a Bo Diddley tribute, that was one group synthesizing his material through a brilliant psychedelic gauze. Now, finally, in 2002 ex-Textones founder Carla Olson has produced and put this authentic tribute album together, and it's a righteous beauty. Olson, a fine solo artist in her own right, assembles a unique congregation of new and veteran musicians here who not only do Diddley's music justice, but also show that the musician/songwriter was not limited to his patented, celebrated style. ...
