Sailing Days CD music
$7.59 Electric Light Orchetra Part II: Pete Haycock (vocals, guitar, bass); Eric Troyer (vocals, keyboards); Neil Lockwood (vocals); Bev Bevan (drums, percussion, background vocals).
Electric Light Orchestra/Electric Light Orchestra, Part II: Wilfrid Wilson Gibson (violin); Richard Tandy (Moog synthesizer); Michael d'Albuquerque (bass guitar); Colin Walker, Jeff Lynne, Mike Edwards , Roy Wood, Bev Bevan.
It's an often-forgotten fact that the Electric Light Orchestra was originally conceived as a side project. Following the orchestrated hard rock of the group's final two albums, LOOKING ON and MESSAGE FROM THE COUNTRY, the Move--Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne and Bev Bevan--decided to further explore this arena with a more classically oriented album under the pseudonym the Electric Light Orchestra. This album was a commercial flop and Wood left to form the more experimental Wizzard. Lynne and Bevan bagged the Move and made ELO their primary endeavor.
This is a transitional album not unlike the Move's LOOKING ON. Like that album, ELO II consists of five very lengthy tracks evenly roughly split between Lynne's Beatlesque pop-rock and classically inspired orchestral interludes, featuring a conceptually obvious cover of "Roll Over Beethoven." Lynne would combine the two more effectively in the future, but ELO II is an interesting stepping stone on that more commercially viable path.
Cut during the summer and fall of 1972, ELO 2 was where Jeff Lynne started rebuilding the sound of the Electric Light Orchestra following the departure of Roy Wood from the original lineup. It was as personal an effort as Lynne had ever made in music, showcasing his work as singer, songwriter, guitarist, sometime synthesizer player, and producer, and it is more focused than its predecessor but also retains some of the earlier album's lean textures. Lynne, drummer Bev Bevan, bassist Michael d'Albuquerque, and keyboardist Richard Tandy comprise the core of the band, with two cellists and a violinist sawing away around them. There were holes in the sound that made the group seem somewhat ragged, as on the pounding "In Old England Town (Boogie No. 2)"; Lynne's singing would also have to develop, and some of the material also showed the need of an editor. On the other hand, "From the Sun to the World (Boogie No. 1)" was a succinct progressive rock workout, and "Kuiama" was a decent showcase for the different sides of the group that worked about as well as any 11-minute progressive rock track of the period. But the very fact that the group's cover of "Roll Over Beethoven" was the hit off of this album also showed how far Lynne had to go as a songwriter (and is indicative of just how far he would go ...
| | Los Griswolds Bring The Rock! CD (2004) Limited Edition
Sailing Days music CDs
$7.55 The Griswolds formed in 1996. Played Philly's famous Trocadero's main stage on different occasions with Goldfinger, The Muffs, Dance Hall Crashers and Dog Eat Dog. They also opened for Def Tones and Handsome at The Khyber in Philly. (Along with many many firehall and dive-bar shows) The Griswolds disbanded in 1999, just before the release of "Life in a Plastic World" due to drummer problems. In 2000, Johnny and Bill, along with ex-members of Scrapple (Wilkes-Barre), formed a rock and roll / hardcore band called The Red Tops. After a great two year run with The Red Tops, playing major venues with bigger bands (although, they WERE hardcore bands), Johnny decided to leave the Red Tops in order to focus MORE on rock and roll and LESS on hardcore. In 2002 the Griswolds came back! With the addition of Brian Jonez on bass and Rich Scarano on drums they became know as LOS Griswolds with a Rock n' Roll sound and a Cowpunk feel. 2003 was a good year for Los Griswolds starting it off with a 4 track demo under their belt they rocked out numerous venues not only in the Philadelphia region but all around the east coast with shows in NJ, MD, VA and showcased their act at the Heavy Rebel Weekender in NC and at the Johnny Cash tribute show in NYC. In 2005 Los Griswolds moved shop out to Southern California where they continued to "Bring The Rock" to the West Coast much like they did on the East! However late 2006 under peaceful terms (and mostly due to Johnny moving back to Philly), Los Griswolds have disbanded. Presently members have formed new projects such as American Speedway (Johnny-Philly,PA) and Seven Dirty Words (Brian and Nate-HB, CA).Here's an album review from Slezegrinder.com:Well, if there was any doubt at all of Los Griswolds' dedication to the as-American-as-corn chip-chile art of Trucker Punk, then you have but to lay yr peepers on the glory-whoring cover of “Bring the Rock”, which not only features a busty, horn throwing rocker chick (cowboy hat included), but also…a big ass truck. With Oklahoma license plates, naturally. Oh, and the last three numbers on the plates are…you got it, fucker, 666. There’s a dude in the band who really is named Griswold- Johnny, the guitarin’, singin’ one – but I bet they’re glad the name brings to mind the Vacation movies too, because the same sense of bad fun and even worse luck runs through these songs like diesel hi-test. They’ve got songs about girls (all of ‘em, really, but especially “Cadillac Girl” and “Devil Went Outta Town”), songs about rehearsing in a trailer (“Doublewide”) and saving rock n’ roll (umm, “Saving Rock N’ Roll”), songs about drugs and booze (“Who’s Got the Cocaine?”, “Cheap ...
