Beethoven: Piano Sonatas Hammerklavier; Pathétique; Op. 49, No. 1
$15.29 On Quake, downtown cello boss Erik Friedlander teams up with Japan's fraternal rhythm section the Takeishi brothers (Stomu and Satoshi on bass and drums, respectively) as well as alto saxophonist Andy Laster for a date of intimate, knotty new jazz. In working with an electric bassist in this setting, the opportunities for unique tonalities are everywhere and are exploited to some degree as they were on an earlier work, The Watchman. Over the years, however, Friedlander has become a composer of interesting ensembles and Quake's is no exception. What is so remarkable about the performances on this recording are details such as counterpoint; on the opener, Laster and Stomu have equal opportunities to engage Friedlander and each other for a knotty, but exhilarating, ride. On the erratically paced and wonderfully breathless "Wire," Friedlander brings shades of different jazz eras and styles to comprise the body of the composition while intense harmonic invention takes places in each musician's solo. The title cut uses Israeli folk themes to construct ...
| | Paul Brody Beyond Babylon CD (2004)
Beethoven: Piano Sonatas Hammerklavier; Pathétique; Op. 49, No. 1
$13.35 On his second album fronting his band Sadawi, trumpeter and composer Paul Brody continues his work in the avant-klezmer trenches, helping to drag that hundred-year-old music kicking and screaming into the 21st century. On Beyond Babylon he shows his unwillingness to be constrained by any ghetto boundaries, opening the album with an extended deconstruction of the Shaker hymn "Simple Gifts" (which features a hair-raisingly skronky banjo solo by Brandon Seabrook), and making use of elements of both dub (on the contemplative and lovely "Timepeace"), and rock (note the guitar parts on "Fragment of Kafka's Friend") as well as lots and lots of modern jazz. Most of the album is thrilling; Brody's take on the ...

Beethoven: Piano Sonatas Hammerklavier; Pathétique; Op. 49, No. 1
$31.99 In this dazzling epic from Akira Kurosawa, a petty thief named Kagemusha (Tatsuya Nakadai) gets saved from a death sentence because he resembles the warlord Shingen Takeda (also Nakadai). The warlord has been fighting two other leaders for control of 16th-century Japan and impersonators often take his place during battles to put him out of harm's way. Because of Kagemusha's strong physical similarities to the warlord, he's a perfect choice for a "shadow warrior." However, the arrangement suddenly changes ...

Beethoven: Piano Sonatas Hammerklavier; Pathétique; Op. 49, No. 1
$15.55 After a string of fine Helmut Lachenmann releases on several labels specializing in contemporary classical music, notably Audivis Montaigne, Schwankungen Am Rand (Fluctuations at the Edge) marks his debut on ECM New Series, and the "notoriously difficult" composer celebrates the occasion by providing an admirably clear introductory essay to his works. The title track, subtitled "Music for Brass and Strings" (somewhat misleading, as percussion instruments, notably two pianos and four specially designed thunder sheets, play a prominent role), was completed in 1975, but has lost none of its power to surprise, both in terms of its sound material (apart from the thunder sheets, Lachenmann's "instrumentation" also includes crumpled wrapping paper) and structure (notably at the four-minute mark where things grind to a halt while the two pianos slowly and repeatedly smash hell out of their top octave). ...

Beethoven: Piano Sonatas Hammerklavier; Pathétique; Op. 49, No. 1
$8.15 Over the years, countless American jazz musicians have pointed out that their efforts to market and promote themselves did not include the United States alone. They also included Europe, where the resources ranged from jazz clubs to jazz musicians to jazz promoters to jazz labels. It's no coincidence that so many jazz compilations released by small independent labels in Europe are full of American improvisers; contact with the United States is the norm for European jazz indies. And there is no shortage of American names on Pirouet's The Best Is Yet to Come, which the Munich, Germany-based Pirouet Records assembled in late 2008. The American musicians on this 79-minute CD include, among others, trumpeter Tim Hagans, guitarist John Abercrombie, acoustic pianist Bill Carrothers, and drummer Bill Stewart. But by no means does the compilation focus on U.S.-based musicians exclusively. Some of the recordings are by European players, and that includes tracks by four different German pianists: ...
