While Puerto Rican sensation Gilberto Santa Rosa has long been known as one of salsa's premier artists, he also has a romantic streak in him that often expresses itself in his heartfelt delivery of beautiful ballads. These two strains have been a part of him for so long that he decided to create an album that presented both on equal footing; that album in VICEVERSA. In his efforts he is assisted in portentuous fashion by famed composer Kike Santander, in the pair's first-ever collaboration. Victor Manuelle and Jose Pinares contribute fine material as well, but in the end it's all down to Santa Rosa and his impassioned delivery of this varied songbook. From the traditional Cuban charanga sound of "El Refran se te Olvido" to the beauty of Manuelle's tender "Si te Dijeron," it's the magic of Santa Rosa himself that comes across most clearly on VICEVERSA.

Puerto Rican singer Gilberto Santa Rosa has enjoyed massive success throughout Latin America and beyond for his particular brand of salsa. Santa Rosa is also a master ballad stylist, an area that gets plenty of attention on 2006's DIRECTO AL CORAZON. There are a few key uptempo tracks here, but those looking for a sustained batch of high-energy salsa may be disappointed. Based on the life of salsa legend Hector Lavoe, director Leon Ichaso's EL CANTANTE, follows the beloved Puerto Rican performer (played by Marc Anthony) as he moves to New York City, and rises through the Bronx's vibrant Latin music scene during the 1960s and '70s. Singing with popular trombonist/bandleader Willie Colon (John Ortiz), Lavoe goes on to a successful solo career, but along the way, he becomes a drug addict, sabotaging not only his music, but his relationship with Puchi (a.k.a. Nilda Roman, portrayed by Jennifer Lopez).
Helmed by Ichaso (PINERO) with documentary-like realism, and carried by Anthony, who bears a striking (albeit thinner) resemblance to Lavoe, EL CANTANTE thoughtfully depicts the rise and fall of a remarkably talented vocalist unable to shake debilitating addiction. Husband and wife in real life, Anthony and Lopez reveal a convincing chemistry, and the movie bolsters the Puchi role to give J.
