The Isley Brothers capture the history of soul music from the late '50s to the early '80s all by themselves. Starting off as a mildly obscure vocal group who eventually struck gold with 1960's delirious "Shout" and the swinging original version of "Twist and Shout," the Isley Brothers changed with the times while staying clear of simple bandwagon jumping. First they added youngest brother Ernie Isley (who had been heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix during and after the guitarist's tenure with his siblings, documented on two impressive tracks here) on acid-tinged lead guitar. Then the Isley Brothers became brilliant interpreters of other peoples' songs (check out what they do with Todd Rundgren's "Hello It's Me") and impressive songwriters on their own, with smashes like "That Lady" and "It's Your Thing." Semi-chronologically assembled (each of the three discs covers a specific period in the band's development, but the songs are arranged with a bit more fluidity within those confines), featuring lots of rarities and lovingly packaged, this definitive box set represents a case history of R&B at its finest from doo-wop to disco.

The music of California-born composer Harold Budd has little in common with the hypnotic Eastern-influenced pulsing of fellow minimalists like Philip Glass or Terry Riley. Instead, his sometimes atonal but often pastoral and lulling compositions for piano most recall the influence of Erik Satie. For their second collaboration, THE PEARL, Budd and co-writer/producer Brian Eno eschew the lengthy explorations of their previous album, THE PLATEAUX OF MIRRORS, in favor of 11 brief miniatures between two and five minutes each. Given evocative, imagistic titles like "Late October" and "Lost in the Humming Air," Budd's watery, occasionally jazz-inflected piano solos are subtly supported by non-obtrusive layers of synthesizers, tape effects and other instrumentation by Eno and co-producer Daniel Lanois. Veteran organist Gene Ludwig is a contemporary of Jimmy Smith and plays in a similar style. Teamed with a solid if unremarkable quartet, Ludwig stretches out on eight standards, some of which are pretty extended. The music falls between hard bop and soul-jazz and is both pleasing and a little derivative. Few surprises occur, but Ludwig plays well and the spirit is high and joyful. Stephen D. Anderson is not the first guitarist to do a keyboardless tribute to the late pianist and composer Bill Evans, but his unaccompanied solo interpretations of pieces either written or performed by Evans are impressive. Anderson, who was inspired in part by the late Lenny Breau's arrangements of Evans' compositions, gets to the essence of each piece, turning out one lyrical setting after another. Not only does he explore the pianist's most widely known works, but also less familiar pieces like "Only Child" and "Remembering the Rain." Highlights include the magical performance of the bittersweet ballad "Time Remembered," and the equally moving take of the mournful "Turn out the Stars" (which incorporates three overdubbed takes in counterpoint) the deliberate, spacious approach to "Blue in Green," along with "Haunted Heart" -- a standard recorded on several occasions by Evans.
