Hybrid Black
$12.09 The very first moments of Rodrigo y Gabriela's sophomore effort, 11:11, hit the listener cold in the face, and not just because of the amazing guitar playing. Sure, it's there, but it's what anyone who heard the duo's astonishing debut would expect. No, it's the sound of the record: immediate, forceful, crystalline; it's in-your-face compelling and impossible to ignore. 11:11 features 11 new compositions, dedicated to 11 musical artists (not all guitarists, either) who have had an influence on the duo. Recorded ...

$14.59 RIVERDANCE won the 1997 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.
The Grammy Award-winning soundtrack to the popular Riverdance stage show has been re-released with a bonus remix of "Riverdance," as well as deluxe packaging which includes photographs from the show. Bill Whelan, who has worked for twenty years as a composer, producer, and arranger (his credits include work for Kate Bush, Hothouse Flowers, Van Morrison, and U2, among others), achieved international recognition for RIVERDANCE.
Whelan incorporates a variety of ethnic musical traditions as well as modern and choral music and the hypnotic, rhythmic hard-shoe Irish dancing for which RIVERDANCE is famous. This album traverses the continents, assembling an amazing group of international and Irish musicians. Standouts include the Irish choral group Anuna performing "Shivna," a haunting piece whose Irish lyrics are based on an 11th Century text.
Recorded at Windmill Lane Studios, Dublin, Ireland.
Personnel: Bill Whelan (arranger, handclaps); Juan Reina Gonzalez (vocals, handclaps); Aine Ui Cheallaigh (vocals); Des Moore ...

| | Amethystium Odonata CD (2001)
Hybrid Black
$12.75 This is the debut album from Amethystium which received a groundswell of support from online listeners, to the tune of a half million downloads before its official release. The album is attributed to Oystein Ramfjord, a composer from Norway who makes ambient electronic music full of mystifying sounds. The opening song, "Opaque," begins with an incredible underwater sonar pulse that makes way for passages of Indian vocals that are very reminiscent of Deep Forest. In fact, most songs employ well-crafted samples of ethnic music from disparate regions. These are held together by a steady synth percussion and sweeping vocals. The speaker phasing on "Enchantment" is particularly effective when ...

| | 2005 Warped Tour Compilation CDs (2005)
Hybrid Black
$8.09 This two-CD set documenting performances at the 2005 Warped Tour, is the third in a series (the first covered '03 and '04). The tour showcases indie bands, nearly all of whom fall into the neo-punk, pop-punk, emo, or post-hardcore categories. Labeled "Stage One" and "Stage Two," the collection gives a satisfying overview of the tour's numerous, variegated acts, a great souvenir for those who caught the show, and a fine substitute for those who missed it.
There are plenty of big names, including Irish-American punks Dropkick Murphys, catchy skate-punks Pennywise, Chicago emo outfit Fall Out Boy, and old-school CA pop-punks the Offspring (whose creepily evil "Beheaded" provides a welcome bit of nastiness among the surplus of heartrending emo). Yet most of the set is dedicated to showcasing young bands--Amber Pacific, Bleed the Dream, and Tsunami Bomb, among them--who are up-and-coming. The material isn't all top notch, but at one song per band ...
