Craig Shields and Larry Chaney are veteran members of the Edwin McCain Band, a singer/songwriter rock outfit out of South Carolina. They played on Edwin's two Top Ten singles, "I'll Be" and "I Could Not Ask for More", and have toured with Edwin nearly non-stop for over a decade, playing to packed houses across the U.S.Dois Gemeos was born out of a mutual love of the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Stan Getz, Joao Gilberto, Paul Desmond, Chet Baker, and Dexter Gordon. All of the members of the Edwin McCain Band contribute to the recording, as well as jazz pianist John Salem, and Larry's son Angel. In addition, a very special guest vocalist is featured on Stevie Wonder's beautiful ballad "Visions". And throughout, Craig's sensual smoky tenor and Larry's soft and seductive nylon string and electric guitar work float effortlessly above the proceedings. How a good-looking Jewish boy from Brooklyn discovered the secret of success in an updated form of mariachi music is perhaps beyond our scope. Then again, it might not be such a mystery after all. Aside from the obvious example of exotica, much easy listening depends upon more than a touch of ethnicity to maintain its musical roots. What Herb Alpert found in Mexican street bands was a previously untapped source of south-of-the-border melody and rhythm. With its unlikely combination of Alpert's cool Chet Baker-like trumpet and the blocky cadences of a marching band, the Tijuana Brass produced a lively, colorful mix that managed to appeal to hips and squares alike.

But here's betting you haven't heard them all together at the same time -- even within the same hymn -- and set to a calypso beat. That's the concept of an ambitious new collection of rearranged, refreshened church music created by master-of-all-keyboards Les Blachut, titled "Catholic Hymnbook Jumpstarted."Blachut, a Berklee College of Music graduate from Florida, has taken 15 "sacred standards" as he calls them and turned them on their ear, with the assistance of a cadre of fine musicians and singers. A jazz vibes player with a soft spot for Caribbean sounds, Blachut has penned arrangements that skip with off-beats, tricky meters and clever rhythms often played in unison, fusion style. In his hands, these 15 hymns, some of them 300 years old and covered centuries ago by the likes of Bach and Vivaldi, now taste of tangy world music. Blachut and his band transform the dirgy standard "A Closer Walk with Thee" into a fun ride to the beach. He has trumpeter Tom Swayzee give us a New Orleans-sounding solo, then he follows himself with a passage on the steel drums that recalls every happy island tune you've ever heard. Somehow, though, he pulls this off while still preserving the song's worshipful theme in the operatic-sounding vocals of Dr. Wilhelmina King. His version of "O Sacred Head Surrounded by Thorns" struts with a mid-tempo R&B groove that could have come straight off pop-gospel radio.
