We Were Talking - Mark DugganCanadian percussionist Mark Duggan has always explored the world of "world music" from African mbira to Indonesian gamelan to Brazilian samba. His global interests led to the 1994 release of "We Were Talking" with Mike Murley on saxophone and Bill Brennan on piano and percussion. This recording could come only from a city like Toronto where the music is as multi-cultural as the society itself. With a diversity of styles, approaches and instruments this CD artfully fuses elements of ancient and contemporary idioms using primarily the language of rhythm and texture. The compositions make references to a variety of "world music" traditions, such as the mbira of Zimbabwe (sometimes known as a thumb piano or kalimba) and the marimba music of Latin America, accompanied by a subtle use of electronics and a jazz-inspired vocabulary. The music has, however, a contemporary perspective reflecting the individual backgrounds and tastes of the musicians. They create a sound which travels back and forth across the lines demarcating contemporary jazz and world music with strong African and Latin flavors. "Duggan finds the right sound for each piece....the music combines a wide variety of world music influences giving each of his pieces a distinct identity...." (Percussive Notes magazine)"Duggan's compositional interests and timely orchestral inventions keep things interesting."(Globe and Mail)"Duggan's composition revealed one of the most rewarding facets of the blending of various world musics, bringing together traditions from both the East and West in an engrossing, intriguing mixture that was spellbindingly original."(Aliant Entertainment) Mark Duggan We Were Talking Songs | 1. | Mookiedono |

$18.55 ABOUT the authorAlways finding it hard to be like everybody else Hokshila stayed true to his heart following the way that might seem way unusual. His round-the world traveling experiences and buskin on the streets in different parts of the world since he was seventeen made key influence to his music style and made it incredibly unique. While living among locals Hokshila observed not only different instrumental techniques but also he faced values, lifestyle and social-political problems of the countries he lived in. Musician got experience that none school could ever teach: night street jams with local youth in Soweto township (South Africa), percussion workshops and capoeira angola sessions in Bahia (Brasil) where Hokshila bought bunch of drums for locals so they could jam together, or even buskin on the streets of Stockholm (Sweden), Oslo (Norway), Copenhagen (Denmark) and making a living of it. ‘I have learned to LOVE music. Can you point me a school that has this subject on the list?’ (Hokshila)ABOUT the album / searching for ZIONText by HokshilaHey, what's up my peeps, I just wanted to tell ya few words 'bout this album! 'Fight for Africa' is my third official album and I am very happy I made it this way.Year 2006 I went back to Africa, and did Cape to Cairo by land. I traveled with my guitar using public transportation and hitching, met great travelers and locals along the way, had jams every night at local bus stations, backpackers, bars, small villages, ghettos, music festivals, beaches; recorded songs with local musicians . All these songs you hear now r written on my trip. I met cool dude called Jimmy from Australia in Malawi and we traveled together all the way to Addis Ababa searching for Mount Zion. Peeps told us that Mount Zion is in Israel with 5 star hotel right on top, some told us Zion was somewhere in Ethiopia and eventually local Rasta’s explained that all Africa is a ZION. So I call this trip ‘walk to Zion’.I wrote a song about Jimmy and was annoying him with it on the road, singing all the time and making up new ridiculous lyrics about how bad and hopeless he was. That was a joke but anyway Jimmy said:’ Hok, man, no one is going to believe this! There is a song about me actually!’ I got to visit world’s famous Rastafarian community in Shashemeni, Ethiopia as well as Hailie’s Selassie’s apartment in Addis.Africa inspires me a lot, you see lots of poverty, human rights issues, street children, guns, people dying of AIDS and malaria, messed up police, corrupted, but at the same time most beautiful smiles, hospitality, friendliness, sweet curiosity, simplicity and so many amazingly talented people.I want to dedicate this album to all children who are born with HIV/AIDS because I think it's totally unfair to come into this world and not to b able to grow up. That's ...
| | Race Knower Blues For Sri Lanka CD (2007)
We Were Talking songs
$12.69 Blues for Sri Lanka Music to me has always been an emotional matter from earliest times of my life. My preoccupation with it was obsessional and in some ways a distracter to other educational interests. My acquaintance with music technology i.e. using computers and music software to record, edit and produce music has only been about four years in the making. This is my first attempt to put some of my work on-line to see if there will be any audience interest or appreciation. This is a desktop production from start to finish in a typical home studio type environment. The technology is not the most sophisticated, and therefore some of the synthesized sounds can lack the authenticity of a real instrument at certain frequencies. The music is experimental and is an attempt to fuse South Asian Musical rhythms with elements of Jazz & Blues. Its origins were purely accidental and as a result, the smallest possibility of seeing it through grew into a concept that fired my interest and its development followed thereafter. I was born in Sri Lanka, formerly the British Colony of Ceylon. It was a listening post for a rich mix of music from all over the world which, provided an opportunity for a broad spectrum of music appreciation in most or its forms. The music of the land however was simply Eastern. In the flute solo in the title track, I was very fortunate in my improvisation to recreate and capture in a sense, the ethnic flavour of that music heard so long ago, before drifting into the blues on the electric piano. The essential identity of this music is based on the rhythm pattern of “Baila” music. This is extremely popular dance music that has been around for centuries. The story behind ...

We Were Talking album
$13.29 “African instruments sparkle within the flow of Kuimba’s World Beat Contemporary sound. Creative, original blendings of instruments and voices provide a unique and richly satisfying musical opportunity. Combining ethnic music with contemporary sound could be tricky, but it is done successfully here, achieving a mood of depth and beauty.” — Heartsong ReviewThe Music:Flavors of Africa and the Americas coalesce in exotic rhythms and Swahili as well as English vocals in this World Beat music by Kuimba for a mellow, upbeat mood. The clear, earthy quality of Lark’s lead voice is joined by Kris’ exuberant tenor producing an unusual and eminently lovely blend. Added to this are African harps and flutes, trombone, acoustic guitar, bass, spicey percussion, and throbbing African drums.Kuimba conveys the significance of cultural diversity and biodiversity through a colorful and informative style ...
