'SCULPTOR' is a perfect blending of styles, a seemless match of textures and tones ... A collaboration between Eric Hopper of Sylken and Alan Bloor of Pholde and Knurl (along with frequent Sylken collaborator Joe G.), the metallic sounds of Alan's sculptures prove to be the perfect compliment to the drifting atmospheres of Eric's music, creating a mesmerizing tableau of sound simultaneously familiar and alien to the listener. With opener "Metalon", the duo create an atmosphere of deep and dark space, a blend of lonely environment and the cold caress of metal. "Call of a Distant Time" propels itself forward with an arpegiated melody that brings to mind the stardust left in a meteor's wake. Skip ahead to "Phasers on Caress" where synth lines bubble and swirl like magma oozing through primoridal worlds, lightly filed tones suggesting strands of otherness throughout. The epic "Keeper of the Deep" brings all of these elements and more together in a summation of where we've gone and leading us into new environments, new territories that have yet to be explored. Engaging and enchanting, 'SCULPTOR' is a brilliant collection of songs which will surely be enjoyed by fans of both Sylken and Pholde, as well as fans of the space music genre. Given the high level of quality of this release, let us hope that it's the first of many such collaborations between these two remarkable talents. ~ © rik maclean © 2004 - PiNG THiNGS ~ ---------------Eric Hopper is Sylken, an ambient composer. Pholde is Alan Bloor, who creates custom-made metal instruments. Together, along with guest Joe G on synths, they create a unique musical masterpiece that blends unexpected elements. I know few people who share my affection for both Berlin school and more ambient styles, and even fewer who would dare to combine them both at once. After the dark gurgling "Metalon" starts us off, we jump into just such a strangely compelling hybrid, "Call of a Distant Time." Swirling deep space sound effects get things going, then a lovely light sequence pops in, along with shimmering synths in the higher register. These two disparate themes somehow meld quite agreeably. The metallic character of Bloor's instruments is evident on "The Eclipse of Mind." The backing synths are bright at first, but then disappear into the dark corners. This and several other tracks are more about texture and mood than melody. "Object of Desires" has some soft guitar work that nicely accents the melancholic sounds, another study in contrasting styles working together well. Favorite track title goes to "Phasers on Caress," which presents as an eclectic collection of abstract sonic shapes. Soft percussion at the end sounds just like the backing of many a classic Tangerine Dream piece from the 1970s. Rich echoes form the basis for the epic "Keeper of the Deep," scary stuff. The brief "Metalons" brings us to the end. $14.85 Windham Hill's successful A Winter's Solstice series started during the label's first year in 1985, and has continued at roughly a new volume every two or three years, each installment containing a bright wintry blend of classical music, reimagined hymns, chiming carols, and atmospheric compositions that have since garnered the name new age. This two-disc set picks some of the best and brightest moments from the series' first eight volumes, including David Qualey's guitar arrangement of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," Liz Story's piano rendition of "Greensleeves," harpist Lisa Lynne's "Northern Lights," and guitarist W.G. Snuffy Walden's sad, haunting "Moon Lake" on disc one. Disc two offers up the ...

Sculptor album
$6.35 VESPERTINE was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.
Bjork's first non-soundtrack album since HOMOGENIC is positively pastoral compared with that release's experimental electronic textures. Swathed in strings and laced with beautiful choral arrangements, VESPERTINE has more in common with SELMASONGS, echoing that DANCER IN THE DARK soundtrack album's meandering melody lines, while smoothing out and adding an ethereal sheen to the more angular approaches of the singer's previous work.
Here the idiosyncratic Icelander lets loose with her full range of vocal stylings, though even her most innocent, little-girl-lost persona can't hide her steely intelligence. The album-opening "Hidden Place" starts with foreboding electronic ...

Sculptor CD music
$11.39 Tangled in Strings:It is my belief that everything is connected. And that from everything and everybody a line is drawn... A connection is made. What we put out into the universe comes back to us through the connections we make. I see my music as my connections to the cosmic energy that connects all of us.... "Strings on my guitar are like strings across the universe"Acoustic music, in nature, is quite mellow- at least that's what most musicians will have you believe. But I can honestly say, that Ronnie is no campfire musician, no cafe singer/ songwriter. Ronnie's album Tangled In Strings is a heavy album, acoustic be damned. The warmth of the guitar playing, the powerful vocals, the beautiful harmonies, the dark overtones- Ronnie shows his heart and his soul all over this album. While the album feels very much like an acoustic power-folk album (I may have made that genre up- but believe me it fits here!), Tangled In Strings could be the acoustic doppleganger of some pretty heavy 70's metal. Each song is finely crafted, showing off Ronnie's talents of both singing and guitar playing. As a vocalist, Ronnie has a very powerful voice that booms far above the music, all the while creating harmonies that are held long enough to give an epic feel to the music. Because that is truly what this music is ...
