The second solo album by Markku Lepistö, Varttinä’s accordionist, takes him from western Finland to the wide world. Markku’s first much-acclaimed album, Silta ("Bridge"), was a eulogy to his roots in southern Ostrobothnia. This is what Markku has to say about his new album: "The album Polku ("Path") tells the story of my life since I left the Ostrobothnia region. Along the way there have been ups and downs, rocky paths, rail tracks, plenty of pitch-black highways, crossroads, comings and goings. On my journey I picked up the pictures and landscapes that are played in this recording. This album wouldn't exist without the friends who have shared my journey."As the years and kilometres have clocked up, Markku has developed his own, fresh language of composition, where Finnish tradition combines in a new way with influences he has collected on his travels round the world. Polku takes the listener from Ostrobothnia via Helsinki to Finisterre, a headland at the end of the world. The totally acoustic sounds in Polku are rich and ruggedly beautiful. Over the years, Markku’s band has gelled together well and in Polku they play in a wonderfully easygoing way. There are also two trio pieces, which Markku plays with his fellow Värttinä artists Janne Lappalainen (bouzouki) and Lassi Logrén (nyckelharpa).Markku Lepistö is one of Finland’s foremost accordionists with many recordings to his credit. Apart from his solo project, Markku plays with the bands Värttinä and Doina Klezmer. Markku Lepisto Polku/Path Songs | 1. | Aosta | $0.99 | |

| | Orkestar Bez Ime Vol. 1-Nice Driveway: Cheers From The Land Of The CD (2005)
Polku/Path
$18.99 Orkestar Bez Ime, meaning "orchestra without a name" in Bulgarian, met in the Ethnic Dance Theatre and has since grown to be one of the Midwest's hottest and most sought-after international dance bands specializing in Balkan music. Using a mix of folk and modern instruments--including accordion, clarinet, dumbek, flute, guitar, kaval, tambura, violin and voice--the group stays close to traditional Eastern Europe through its American melting-pot sensibility.Comprised of alumni and members of Ethnic Dance Theatre (EDT), OBI focuses mainly on Balkan music, but presents the full range of international folk dance interests from Scandinavia to Israel to French Canada and beyond. Members include Dee Langley who has played accordion since age 4 squeezing all the way to play for the Dolina Folk Dancers (1989-1996) and Ethnic Dance Theatre (since 1998). Tim Wahl (kaval, tambura, kitchen sink) was a founding member of EDT 30 years ago. He likes nothing more than a set list which requires him to change instruments for each tune. Natalie Nowytski honed her vocal skills at her grandmother's knee and climbed her way onto the lap of Mila Vocal Ensemble, which she directed for five years. She has also performed as a percussionist since 2000. Katrina Mundinger has played clarinet for 25 years and folk music for 10. She ...

$27.15 “Milongas, tangos and chacareras, each one tumbling after the other with a mix of wry nonchalance and highly disciplined precision.” — The Irish TimesYou are invited on a voyage to the New World with Lunfardia, whose freewheeling repertoire embraces simmering Tangos and Milongas from Buenos Aires, rough-hewn Chacareras from the Argentinean pampas, breezy Bolivian Huaynos and grooving Joropos from Venezuela. That so much musical ground is covered with casual artistry and engaging authenticity speaks volumes for the musicians in Lunfardia, the heart of which is the charismatic and enduring partnership of Buenos Aires native, guitarist and singer Ariel Hernandez, and Ireland’s leading classical accordionist Dermot Dunne. Ioana Petcu-Colan’s bright singing violin takes flight here, while Malachy Robinson, her bass playing colleague from the Irish Chamber Orchestra, is also liberated in his gutsy rhythmic role alongside the outstanding Peruvian percussionist Frank Vidal. A \'picada\' is a mixed offering of small plates at an Argentinean cafe and perfectly describes the fascinating mix of folk styles represented here, played with real panache and virtuosity by an extravagantly talented group, which prove that there is a lot more to Argentina than just the tango\" - Cormac LarkinIRISH TIMES - Ireland, March 14, 2008 ****Taking their name from a 19th- century Buenos Aires argot, and their debut CD title from an Argentinian form of tapas, Lunfardia celebrate ...
