Baggott / Peterson Scratching The Surface CD

The tunes on this CD are a selection from literally hundreds which we know and have played for old-time dances and other events during the last fifteen years or so. Some of them are well-known traditional tunes, some are recent compositions, some are obscure pieces that we have gleaned from old printed sources and old recordings that have been re-released after having been forgotten for decades ... they run the gamut, so to speak.Fiddle and piano make a good combination of instruments. The fiddle carries the melody, while the steady bass line of the piano left hand and the chordal harmony of the right hand provide the perfect foundation so that the music comes off sounding solid, complete, and uncluttered. We have played for so many dances where people have come up to us afterwards and told us that we sound like there are four or five instruments playing, and they find it astonishing that we get so much sound from just the two instruments.Although there is definitely an old-timey or celtic connection to what we do, we really do not consider ourselves as part of any particular idiom. We aren't trying to recreate "the good old days" or preserve a dying tradition or any of that. We are just a couple of folks who like playing fiddle tunes simply because it feels good and because people tell us it makes them feel good to hear it. If we can do a good job of that, then all the other stuff will just take care of itself.Give the samples a listen and, if you like what you hear, please buy the CD!
