\"What clean, pneumatic piano (Sean O’Connell). What righteous swing (bassist Miguel Sawaya, drummer Miles Senzaki). What a keen choice of covers (Harry Nilsson, Lou Reed, Fiona Apple). Add just a scratch of harmonic violence, like artful spray paint, and you’ve got modern jazz you can play for anybody.\"-Greg Burk @ LA Weekly, November 2006From the pages of the OC Weekly:Leviathan Brothers\' keyboardist (and occasional OC Weekly contributor) Sean O\'Connell announced from the DiPiazzas stage: “This week marks the sixth year of the five-year anniversary of Tupac\'s death. To commemorate the occasion, we\'re going to play an original.” Now that\'s wit. He and his band mate, drummer Miles Senzaki, then commenced to forge a moving soul-jazz composition that cascaded with great beauty. Rare is the group for whom between-song banter alone is worth the price of admission, but such is the case with Leviathan Brothers. The fact that the Hawthorne-based duo create rhythmically kinetic and elegantly melodic compositions and inventively extrapolate on some classic pop tunes (including Lou Reed\'s “Perfect Day,” Nilsson\'s “One,” Beach Boys\' “Don\'t Talk [Put Your Head on My Shoulder],” David Bowie\'s “Life on Mars?”) is a huge bonus. Recalling Medeski, Martin + Wood and the Bad Plus, minus the bass, of course (4-stringer Miguel Sawaya departed after LB\'s self-titled 2006 EP), Leviathan Brothers possess excellent chops, tight song structures and zero jazz-snob stodginess. Their improvisational tangents balance observatory training with playfulness and just enough cowbell (more would be gratuitous and too obvious). Tonight\'s rendition of “Life on Mars?” is done with glamboyant flair and the surging dynamics and purging dramatics of a Cold War Kids song would likely have caused its creators to blush over how great LB made it sound.Leviathan Brothers had the light but very appreciative crowd hollering for more by set\'s end, so the band did the honorable thing: They called it an evening. Leviathan Brothers
$15.05 Unlike Bobby Hutcherson's previous super mellow effort For Sentimental Reasons, this recording is charged with increased energy and vitality, inspired by the music of John Coltrane. Hutcherson plays the part of Coltrane's tenor and soprano sax with his vibraphone quite tastefully, while guitarist Anthony Wilson adds a new chordal dimension to the music far different than a woodwind instrument. Pianist Joe Gilman is perfectly matched with his bandmates, a supple, inventive, yet forceful musician who lends great depth to the background, or in tandem with the lead instruments. California drummer and longtime confrre of Hutcherson Eddie Marshall plays as well as ever, while bassist Glenn Richman is the much lesser known but able fifth wheel. The leader is as familiar as anyone with this music, being a survivor of the turbulent '60s ...

Experience the sound of the five-strong band just the way you’ve asked for them at sell-out shows--complete with onstage banter and enthusiastic crowd huzzahs. Engineered by Mike Doherty, who has recently done live recording with Hot Toddy and Isaac and Blewett, Live at the Taproom features tracks recorded before a full live audience as well as private and live-off-the-floor recordings, all from the same weekend. The result is a high-energy performance with the control necessary for the quieter, sensitive tracks--superior sound quality all the way through. There are no overdubs or edits to the songs--the performances remain intact, heard just as they were at the recording session at Fredericton’s own The Taproom, who along with local brewery Picaroons helped fund the project. Longtime Vetch friend Tim Rideout brings his unique talents to bear on the finished product, having not only mastered the record but arranged a few guest appearances from familiar characters, who help provide as rounded-out a listening experience as you would get sitting back and taking in a show from start to finish. This is the first recorded performance of the Vetch that is Kora, Matte, Jeannine, Andrew, and Scott--it’s eclectic, it’s fun, and it’s hot off the presses. Glenn Meisner(producer, CBC Atlantic Airwaves, Natalie MacMaster, Dutch Mason):. . . the interaction with the audience adds to the impact of the recording. It is almost impossible to recreate this energy in the studio. The listener has the feeling that they are actually at the gig and can feel the heat from the stage. All in all, a first rate recording from Vetch which should propel the group to the upper echelons of the Canadian Independent Music scene.Bob MersereauTelegraph JournalThe disc captures the full-on fun of the five-piece, the celebration of the night on stage. There's no preciousness here, these are people that want to make music, have fun doing it and appreciate that there's an audience to join them as well. There's an even desire to create and to entertain. Old favorites such as Story of Three prove they still have a shelf-life, and new tunes show the tap is still wide-open.Vetch the band, as opposed to Vetch the singer as we first were introduced, has a lot of new options. Two-part horns counter already jazzy melodies. Organ fills erupt out of nowhere, with classic sixties r'n'b hints. There's a recklessness that borders on collapse at times, but that bravado playing only adds excitement. It's live, folks.I can't think of another band that sounds like Vetch. The combination of instruments, including the instrument of Kora's voice, ...
