Matt Maly's middle name is Honesty. A musician from the suburbs of Houston who's most comfortable when holding an acoustic guitar, Matt spent a majority of his junior high and high school careers playing with all sorts of garage bands but recently found his calling in doing his own thing and letting the song itself take over. "Summer," fittingly written and recorded over the summer of 2006, traces the experience of finding someone for whom you're willing to change everything, successfully changing yourself for the better, but then losing that person and doing your best to keep to what you've learned and to not end back up at square one. AaroChele is: Aaron Kaplan: vocals, guitars, banjo, mandolin, bass, harmonica, shakers, pots and pans, kazoo, lap harp, door stop, socket wrench, microphone stand, sleigh bells, xylophone, pop bottle, slide whistle, bongos, and tambourine. Michele Kaplan: vocals, keyboard, flute, kalimba, Christmas bows, ocarina, slide whistle, kazoo, car keys, nut rattle, buttons on a string, jar lid, Chinese balls, whistling, and bee buzz. History We are a husband and wife duo now living in Wisconsin. We hale from Salem, OR, where we both were involved in various musical activities. Aaron was making himself known as a solo singer/songwriter in the coffee house scene, while Michele was in the advanced choir at North Salem High. We met at a nursing home when a local TV show, The Songwriter's Venue, was taping a show there and we were both on the schedule to play. We were "just friends" for a long time, but after many trials and tribulations, we finally got together. We were married in September 2004. Six months later, we found out we were going to have a baby. We decided to move to Wisconsin, partly because we thought it would be a better place to raise a child, partly because we wanted a change, and partly because we have family out here. In November 2005 we finished our first CD together, which we called simply AaroChele, just about a month before our daughter was born. We started it while in Salem, but finished it after we moved to our new apartment in Marshfield. It is a light-hearted collection of our original eclectic folk/rock songs. The key to our sound is that we draw influence from so many different styles and periods of music that the end result sounds rather unique. Since our daughter was born in December 2005, our music has been put on the back burner. Still, since then we have performed many times at church events, a few times at a local open mic, and we even appeared once on a local TV show called It's Happening. We have a pretty large back-log of material, and hope to record more albums in the future when we have the time and the proper equipment. The Songs The inspiration for our songs came from many different places, and both of us were part of the writing and arranging process. “The Skunk Song” was inspired by a skunk that was dead on the side of the road. Michele told Aaron “I bet that skunk will stay there forever because no one will want to touch it.” Both of us felt sorry for skunks and their bad rap; in that moment Aaron decided we should write a song about it. We got the title for “Dance You Monster to my Soft Song” from a painting by Paul Klee, a very talented but underappreciated artist. I (Michele) was inspired to write “The Colors” because I moved from Oregon to Maryland and back to Oregon for reasons of trying to do what I believed to be right. When I went back to OR, I did it only to be with Aaron and I was scared I would lose him anyway especially because everyone said it was a bad reason to move back across the country. They were wrong!
