| | Plaid Penmanship CD Plaid Penmanship Discography of CDs
Plaid Penmanship is the newest and final incarnation of Ian Hoffman’s live band, formerly known as Lucent Man. They are a mix of pop/rock/jazz/indie/electronica and just about everything else in between. This makes for great songs that are unique but still easy to sing along to in your head. Citing influence from Danny Elfman, Beck, Stepehn Malkmus, Love, Talking Heads, Elliot Smith, Frank Zappa and many more, Plaid is an energetic, original, exciting group. Just one listen and you will be a Plaid disciple for life.Ian has changed formats and members over the years, but his relentless outpouring of music has remained, and he is on a prolific streak that seems to have no end in site. His music embodies many influences but still remains his own. His unique songwriting, less-than-standard voice, and bewildering lyrics make Plaid Penmanship what it is. Pairing various moods with thought-provoking instrumentation give you a band that will never go stale.Formed by lead singer/songwriter/rhythm guitarist/keyboardist Ian Hoffman 3 years ago, Plaid Penmanship crosses genre borders to satisfy most music snobs. Ian is joined in the group by bass player and occasional back-up vocalist Matt Ginsberg (you may have seen him playing mandolin with Dungen at their last Chicago show). Keyboardist and only member with a master’s degree Kevin Goss. Legendary drummer/percussion (and older brother of Ian) Bill Hoffman. Lead guitar by Keith Schell (formerly of Dirty Love and others). | | Melanie Fiona Bridge CD (2009)
Plaid Penmanship
$8.78 Melanie Fiona's debut single, "Give It to Me Right," was a perfect 2009 pop-R&B recording. The single coupled a timeless classic (the Zombies' "Time of the Season") with roof-raising vocals and infectious pop hooks that stuck like peanut butter. Fiona's single was perfect, albeit a touch formulaic. Because of this, it's no surprise that a large chunk of her debut album, THE BRIDGE, is much of the same. Like any good 2009 pop-soul recording, the album offers influences from decades of soul music. Fiona, a Kanye West protégé, collaborates with about as many styles of music as she has producers and writers, who include most prominently Canadian R&B singer-songwriter Andrea Martin, Rob Fusari, Peter ...

| | Steve Morse Out Standing In Their Field CD (2009)
Plaid Penmanship
$11.18 Although Steve Vai and Joe Satriani get the lion's share of the credit for popularizing "instrumental guitar-driven rock" for metalheads in the late '80s, another gentleman was merrily shredding on the six-string around this same era (and issuing all-instrumental recordings, as well) -- Steve Morse. And despite a full-time gig as Ritchie Blackmore's replacement in Deep Purple since 1994, Morse has managed to find the time along the way to reunite with his trusty rhythm section of bassist Dave LaRue and drummer Van ...
| | Sven Jacobs Blues Today CD (2006)
Plaid Penmanship
$6.69 Sven Jacobs, singer/songwriter, spent his early twenties sailing the oceans, writing, and dreaming of better things. Originally from South Africa, Sven made a home on the west coast of Canada, where his laid back nature, developed through the people, inspired a way of being. His snowboarding culture added to his already calm way, as he says “everything in time.” Adolescent years were more about forming, learning, and ultimately growing in his passion for music. “Some nights were spent strumming a bit of guitar on the beach, some nights we played the clubs. There was still a lot of growing up to do.” His music has naturally always had a strong sense of rhythm and time, something others have attributed to his African blood, saying “you could only be from South Africa.” Once his music knowledge and theory were developed, Sven spent his time traveling, navigating ships across oceans, and backpacking through towns and cities. “Traveling had ...

Plaid Penmanship
$10.15 Noise (noiz) n.: Sound or a sound that is loud, unpleasant, unexpected, or undesired. Attack ( -t k ) v. attacked, attacking, attacks: To set upon with violent force. Now why would anyone want loud, unpleasant sounds set upon them with violent force? Why the fuck not? For decades red blooded folk all across the globe have used such Noise (I.E. rock n roll) as their way vent, their way to escape, their way to cope with a world that doesnt understand them and sure doesnt give a shit about them. You all know the feelings you get when you put on one of your favorite tunes and crank the volume to a skull-shattering level: increased heart rate, involuntary twitching (not in all cases), uncontrollable urges to kill everything/one in sight and overthrow the government.Alright, that may be a bit exaggerated. But the point is that MUSIC has ...

| | Yellow Then Blue Currents CD (2007)
Plaid Penmanship
$7.49 Yellow Then Blue is an exploratory musical project by multi-instrumentalist/composer Justin Deming. Various musical styles from Justin’s history are represented and melded together to create alchemy of experimental sound. These diverse tastes include experimental electronic, drum and bass, punk rock, prog rock, jazz, and ambient styles. “Guitar was the first instrument that I felt a strong connection to. I played and listened to a lot of punk rock music when I was a kid. Later, I matured into prog rock and then later jazz. With jazz though I decided I should put all of my energy into the saxophone. Learning the flute came later as a result of all that. Classical piano was really my first instrument but I hated the lesson/practice structure.” Justin’s music often presents huge contrasts, light-but-dark, happy-but-sad, soft-but-aggressive, fast and yet somehow ballad-like. One listener stated; “It's like the soundtrack to having a purely sublime moment amidst the chaos of the city.” The artist has said, “Over time the name Yellow Then Blue came to represent this duality that I kept noticing. Originally I picked this name because a friend of mine with synesthesia described my music as being cool because it was yellow and then blue. Now it seems even more appropriate as a title seeing as those colors are opposites in the spectrum.”Currents, the first release by Yellow Then Blue, is a four-part drum and bass suite. Although the overall style of the piece is easily described as being drum and bass, six instruments are played and recorded live ...
