Hey, Mr. Spaceman is a children's album that adults can enjoy as well, including collectors who will be surprised to find a couple of bona fide rarities. The theme is space age retro, but the songs cover a wide chronology, from the early '50s all the way up to 2003, the compilation's year of release. The recordings encompass hits and obscurities licensed from many different labels, from Sheb Wooley's chart-topping "The Purple People Eater" and Billy Lee Riley's rockabilly classic "Flyin' Saucers Rock & Roll" to the B-52's' "Planet Claire" and Dennis Scott's new recording of the instrumental "Telstar." Where else is one likely to find Jimmy Durante's forgotten novelty "We're Going UFO'ing" and Ella Fitzgerald's "Two Little Men in a Flying Saucer," officially licensed from the original master tapes? Flutist Hubert Laws began his solo career with two little-known LPs for Atlantic, of which this was the first. Joined by pianist Armando Corea (before he became known as Chick), bassist Richard Davis and either Jimmy Cobb or Bobby Thomas on drums, Laws is in fine form during what is essentially a straight-ahead jazz set. Some of the music is a little funky, but throughout, Laws (who plays piccolo on two of the seven numbers) is in excellent form. Highlights include "Miss Thing," "Bessie's Blues," and his own "Bembe Blue." Neither of the Atlantic sets have been reissued in full on CD yet. ~ Scott Yanow
This two-fer from Collectables features a pair of out-of-print LPs by jazz flutist Hubert Laws: The Laws of Jazz and Flute By-Laws, both were originally released on Atlantic in 1966. Among the 14 cuts are "Bessie's Blues," "Bloodshot," "No You'd Better Not," "Strange Girl" and "Baila Cinderella." These albums are worth acquiring for any fan of straight-ahead jazz. ~ Al Campbell
