| | Michael Landau Live CD Michael Landau Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
It's fitting that the name of the label that put out the 2006 double-disc live set by the Michael Landau, Live, is called Tone Center. Because tone is an enormous part of Landau's guitar playing throughout the release. Recorded over a two-year period in North Hollywood, the album's 12 tracks ooze with blooze -- especially evident by the crawling album opener, "Worried Life Blues" (which sees Landau alternate between spacious blues phrasing and wailing away at his instrument). The usual suspects serve as a main influence throughout -- Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, etc. -- but Landau is as skilled a player as any of the blues-rock revivalists of the early 21st century. ~ Greg Prato

Live album
$13.79 Bassist Jonas Hellborg, guitarist Shawn Lane (one time Black Oak Arkansas member at age 15) & drummer Jeff Sipe (Aquarium Rescue Unit) present electric jazz recorded from various concerts in Germany. The songs were played by the trio from 1996-97, but we
The albums that bassist Jonas Hellborg has made with guitarist Shawn Lane and drummer Jeff Sipes (aka Apt. Q-258) have all been an invigorating blend of jaw-dropping virtuosity and immediately accessible melodic and harmonic beauty. Personae is no exception to what has now become a pretty well established rule. As usual, Lane's guitar tends to be the focus of the compositions and takes the lead role in the performances. His style is quite elaborate and "notey," but he rarely places flash over substance -- the joyful lyricism of his playing on " Heretics" is a fine example. Even when the density of his technique threatens to overwhelm the music, as it does on "Rice With the Angels," that very density creates its own interest and its own harmonic identity. Only fellow guitarists will be likely to find every minute of each long composition completely enthralling, but there's no denying both the excitement of his style and the depth of his musical thinking. Then there's Hellborg himself, who rarely chooses an inessential note and never fails to impress with his own amazing technical prowess. Sipe is a sympathetic and intuitive accompanist who never tries to upstage the others. Personae is a worthy contribution to the growing catalog of excellent recordings by this trio. ~ Rick Anderson
Personnel: Jonas Hellborg (bass); Shawn Lane (guitar); Jeff Sipe (drums).
| | Scott Henderson Live! CDs (2005)
Live CD music
$18.05 This double-CD features consistently ferocious electric guitar from Scott Henderson. Recorded live at La Ve Lee (a small club near Los Angeles), the extended program has Henderson mostly in the spotlight with electric bassist John Humphrey offering strong support and drummer Kirk Covington sometimes contributing rockish vocals that are as much shouting as they are singing. Henderson plays some jazz on Wayne Shorter's "Fee Fi Fo Fum," digs into blues now and then, and displays some country roots on "Hillbilly in the Band" but mostly plays high-intensity fusion, tearing into the pieces and showing that he could hold his own with any rock/fusion guitarist. Invigorating playing. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Dennis Chambers Boston T Party CD (2006)
Live music CDs
$14.29 In the '80s, there appeared to be an onslaught of fusion releases that managed to incorporate elements of funk into the mix, while also favoring an incredibly clean production. Although the style appeared to go largely out of vogue in the '90s, several veteran players continued to stick to their guns, including drummer extraordinaire Dennis Chambers. Chambers has been releasing solo albums since the late '90s, yet he's probably best known as a hired gun, having played alongside several renowned artists of the rock world -- Santana, Steely Dan, and Parliament-Funkadelic -- as well as guitarist John Scofield. In 2006, Chambers united with three other musicians equally skilled on their respective instruments -- bassist Jeff Berlin, guitarist Dave "Fuze" Fiuczynski, and keyboardist T. Lavitz -- and issued the ten-track jamfest Boston T Party. If you're a fan of expertly played modern-day fusion jams, Boston T Party should certainly be your cup of tea, as evidenced by such tracks as "D'funk'd" and "Around About Way." But if it's tight song structures you're after, Boston T Party is the complete opposite. ~ Greg Prato

Personnel: Dennis Chambers (drums); T Lavitz (keyboards); David Fiuczynski (fretless bass).

| | Sonny Terry At Sugar Hill CD (1961)
Live music CDs
$9.65 Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley).
As anyone who knows their work is aware, there is no shortage of live recordings of Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee (indeed, it sometimes seems as though tapes exist of every show they ever played). The 11 songs here, recorded at the famous San Francisco nightclub, catch the duo very near--if not quite at--their peak and on a very good night. Both musicians get chances to sing some of their standards, including "Sweet Woman Blues," "Born to Live the Blues," "Baby, I Knocked on Your Door," and "I Got a Little Girl." The lineup of material is extremely strong and the sound has held up remarkably well over the years, with near-perfect fidelity on the music and just enough room ambience so that you never lose sight of the fact that this is a concert performance.
Recorded in San Francisco in December, 1961. Originally released on Fantasy (8091). Includes original release liner notes by Chuck Ellsworth.
Personnel: Sonny Terry (guitar, vocals) and Brownie McGhee (harmonica, vocals).
| | Johnnie Taylor Loverboy CD (1986)
Live songs
$14.49 The title tune was a nice change of pace, part mocking and part confrontational. Otherwise, it was a standard Taylor record on Malaco -- lots of fine, earnest gospel/soul singing with blues underpinnings, expert production and arrangements, and one or two songs that might have become staples in the '60s or '70s. But you can't help feeling that time has passed many of the Malaco (and Ichiban) artists by. ~ Ron Wynn

Live CD music
$14.69 CHANTAL CHAMBERLAND NOMINATED -FEMALE VOCALIST OF THE YEAR - CANADIAN SMOOTH JAZZ AWARDSElegance and sensuality mingle in the music of smoky-voiced chanteuse Chantal Chamberland. Smooth as a dry martini and equally intoxicating, Chamberland's third album DRIPING INDIGO cements her role as one of the best interpreters of classic songbook favorites. Two factors set Chamberland's music apart from the pack. First, the arrangements are slow and sexy relying on a small jazz ensemble for backing (piano, sax, bass, light rhythm). Secondly is her luscious voice, which caresses the listener with a breathy purr throughout the album. With a repertoire that features "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes," Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" and " How Deep Is Your Love," the album slowly seduces with its corner jazz club ambience and torch singer grace.** ** SCROLL DOWN TO VIEW COMMENTS POSTED BY CD BABY CUSTOMERS THAT HAVE PURCHASED DRIPPING INDIGO ** **
