MC Breed - Best Of Breed 1991-1997: Jewel Case DVD
$9.99 Released on the eve of R. Kelly's court date, where he faced some serious charges and a very incriminating videotape, the first five chapters of the Closet Cycle confused, amazed, and delighted his fans. The entirety of the series, including all 12 chapters, is sure to have the same effect. Essentially an R&B soap opera, complete with the sets, lighting, convoluted plotlines, and scandalous secrets ...

| | Pucho & His Latin Soul Brothers El Nino CD (1999)
MC Breed - Best Of Breed 1991-1997: Jewel Case DVD
$13.69 The first thing you should know is that, yes, "Copacabana" is the Barry Manilow song, which gives some idea of the crossover vibe of this album. The second is that the song is still a bit sickly sweet, of course, but Pucho and his latest set of Latin Soul Brothers do a fair job with it, with flutists ...

| | Scarlet Rivera CD (1977)
MC Breed - Best Of Breed 1991-1997: Jewel Case film
$11.59 With all respect to the likes of David LaFlamme, Papa John Creach. David Cross, and Jean-Luc Ponty, it is arguably Scarlet Rivera (violin) who has consistently found specific and viable places for the violin in rock. While best known for her stint with Bob Dylan circa his Desire (1975) album, Rivera would go on to accompany a literal who's who of popular music ranging from New York Doll David Johansen to the Indigo Girls and blues revivalist Keb' Mo'. She also issued two solo long players in the mid-'70s, commencing with this eponymously titled platter. Scarlet Rivera (1977) reflects the artist's classical training as well an obvious love of jazz and even the genesis of the world music scene, although the genre would not develop the moniker for several decades yet. Backing Rivera are future Joe Jackson Band percussionist Gary Burke (drums/vibes) and former Mama Lion member Ed Mikenas (bass). There are also a pair of lesser-established -- but no less crafty -- musicians in the form of Dominic Cardinale (keyboards) and Rolly Hui (woodwinds/vocals/harmonica). In addition to fusing with jazz and demonstrating her ...
| | Rhythm & Booze: 25 Shots Of Vintage R&B CD (2005)
MC Breed - Best Of Breed 1991-1997: Jewel Case review
$13.95 This R&B collection focuses on songs about alcoholic beverages. The material is from the 1940s and 1950s.
There's no denying the massive appeal of songs about drinking -- Jimmy Buffett probably wouldn't have a career if not for the subject (which, come to think of it, is a persuasive argument for reinstating prohibition). But anyway -- Rhythm & Booze: 25 Shots of Vintage R&B compiles more than two dozen whiskey-soaked roadhouse classics from the 1950s, culled mostly from EMI-affiliated labels like Imperial and Aladdin. This is R&B at its most raw and raucous, evoking a near-mythical realm of backwoods barrooms populated by bad men and loose women. Not the most original idea for a compilation, but endlessly entertaining nonetheless -- no dive bar's jukebox should be without it. Highlights include J.B. Lenoir's "Give Me One More Shot," Floyd Dixon's "Wine Wine Wine," La Verne Ray's "Drunk, That's All," and Amos Milburn's "Let ...
| | Herb Alpert South Of The Border CD (1964) (Import) Japan; Mini LP Sleeve
MC Breed - Best Of Breed 1991-1997: Jewel Case DVD
$27.19 Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass' 1964 record SOUTH OF THE BORDER, features the trumpeter's breezy jazz outfit interpreting tracks from Jobim's "Girl From Ipanema" to the Broadway tune "I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face."
Herb Alpert was still using an array of SoCal studio all-stars as his Tijuana Brass when South of the Border (1964) began to restore the combo's good name after the modest Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass, Vol. 2 (1963) failed to ignite a fire in listener's ears. In his essay accompanying Shout! Factory's 2005 Signature Series reissue of South of the Border, Alpert comments that the Sol Lake composition "Mexican Shuffle" "opened a new door for me." That passageway meant the loss of the Tijuana Brass' practically forced mariachi style and the rise of Alpert's approach in arranging familiar melodies in fresh, creative settings. Nowhere would this stylistic progression be as pronounced as in the horn-driven updates of several then-concurrent chart hits. For instance, the mod sonic ...
