| | Fine Time! The South Side Of Soul Street CD
This best-of offers a selection of prime 1960s Southern soul from the obscure Florida Minaret label. Highlights include the strutting R&B of Genie Brooks's "Fine Time," the impeccably named Johnny Dynamite's Northern Soul stomper "The Night the Angels Cried," and a young Candi Staton performing "The Judgement" as half of Candy and Billy. Sundazed gets props for issuing this 18-track collection of fingerpoppin' soul from Florida's Minaret label. While most of this music is hopelessly obscure to all but the most ardent collectors, that means nothing. Everything on this compilation, whether it's the slow, strolling soul blues groove of Willie Cobbs on "Don't Worry About Me," Doris Allen's brazen, sad, and flayed-heart soul on "Shell of a Woman," the tough, yearning swagger of Johnny Dynamite on "The Night the Angels Cried," or the whippety funk of "Bright Star" by John Hamilton and Allen, it's all killer no filler. This is Southern soul at its finest; it rocked the regional jukeboxes of barrooms, diners and bowling alleys in the late '60s. There are also cuts by the great Genie Brooks, and the spine slinking Double Soul. Sundazed has done an absolutely brilliant job in mastering these records for the CD era, and bringing back to the surface 18 cuts of burning, emotional intensity. Just get it. ~ Thom Jurek Fine Time! Fine Time! The South Side Of Soul Street
$11.65 Kid 'n Play have been unfairly branded as pop sellouts over the years, despite the fact that they really never had a big crossover hit single. It was more their image that crossed over -- they had their own unique sense of visual style, yet they were positive, non-threatening, and, well, too gosh-darn friendly for the taste of street-level purists. Plus, they were young and clean-cut enough for middle-class teenage audiences to identify with. Accusations of being soft notwithstanding, those qualities are exactly what give their debut album, 2 Hype, its refreshing ...
