Didjitalis: Naoki Lo (guitar); Mike Edwards (didjeridu, bass guitar); Alex McLean (saxophone); Mark Wells (bass guitar); Nick West (programming). This album is a re-release of the Didjitalis debut, Positive Form Negative Space, originally released in Australia. The concept is to mix trance and dance elements from Nick West, a Tokyo-based DJ, with didjeridoo grooves from Mike Edwards -- organic and electronic coming together, as it were. The result is rather unsurprising in many ways. Indeed, the organic and electronic are fused together perfectly, with straightforward trance and dance grooves taking over throughout. At the same time, the inclusion of the organic is realistically not such an innovation in recorded music. Trance and dance DJs regularly sample organic, traditional, and ethnic bits and pieces in their compositions. The primary innovation here presumably comes in the live shows. That said, the album is entirely enjoyable, with catchy riffs and hooks not quite contributed by either artist alone, but through their combination. Worth a listen. ~ Adam Greenberg Australian Trance Dance Music Didjitalis Australian Trance Dance Songs | 1. | Time Rift |

| | Butthole Surfers Locust Abortion Technician CD (1987)
Australian Trance Dance
$13.09 Butthole Surfers: Gibby Haynes (vocals); Paul Leary (guitar); Jeff Pinker (bass); King Koffey (drums). Widely considered to be the Butthole Surfers' crowning achievement, 1987's LOCUST ABORTION TECHNICIAN plays to the Texas acid-rock band's strengths, unveiling one twisted tune after another. The album begins with "Sweat Loaf," the group's skewering of (and/or tribute to) Black Sabbath's "Sweet Leaf," and then moves on to the sinister, lumbering "Graveyard." As always, the gleefully subversive ensemble's calling cards are Paul Leary's blistering guitar lines and Gibby Haynes's maniacal yelping and distorted crooning. Although the Surfers aren't afraid to offer up a fairly straightforward punk song (the rocked-out "Human Cannonball" hints at their future accessibility), these mad sonic scientists seem most comfortable making listeners uncomfortable, as on the closing "22 Going on 23," which happily and intrepidly pushes the limits of offensive subject matter. Though some Surfers diehards (particularly those frightened by this record's surely Gacy-inspired clown face cover) favor the group's earlier work, most fans will attest to the bizarre ...
| | Toe Fat Two CD (1971) (Import) Germany
Australian Trance Dance
$19.35 Having represented the first half of their curious moniker on the cover of album number one, Toe Fat proceeded to address the second on album number two, the imaginatively named Toe Fat II, with what appears to be a battle scene, pitting some species of alien lard against assorted roast chicken parts and a helpless bunch of grapes. Oh, and if you think that makes no sense, little else about the group's sophomore slump, which was released by Motown's rock imprint Rare Earth (Parlophone in the U.K.) does, either. For starters: recent lineup changes had seen founding members Ken Hensley and drummer Lee Kerslake depart for greater riches with a nascent Uriah Heep, and be replaced by Alan Kendall and Brian Glascock, respectively; bassist John Glascock was still being credited under the surname of Konas, for some mysterious reason; and aging frontman Cliff Bennett -- a pre-British Invasion relic, famous for having fronted the Rebel Rousers -- still seemed a bit unsure about this newfangled, heavy rock thing. As a result, confusion had also set in on the musical front, even though bluesy hard rock still predominated, thanks to the forceful riffs, hot licks, and weeping wah-wah provided ...
