Iron Maiden/Queensrÿche-esque prog metal reaches far and wide throughout the world, as evidenced by the emergence of Brazil's Angra. On their sixth full-length overall, 2006's Aurora Consurgens, you get truckloads of opera-like vocals, finely honed guitar harmonies and riffs, and of course, drumming so perfectly on-time that it would make your average metronome green with envy. Although the group is quick to point out that Aurora Consurgens is not a concept album, it does manage to "deal with the relationship between alchemy and psychological transformation." Could the chaps have invented a new metal subgenre -- "psychological" metal? It's certainly possible, after hearing such prog metal epics as "The Voice Commanding You" and "Window to Nowhere." Musically however, Aurora Consurgens would serve as the perfect soundtrack for a medieval knight saving a damsel in distress. Depending on what side of the rock music fence you sit on, Angra's 2006 effort is either preposterous dribble or an utter masterwork. ~ Greg Prato

It's easy to belittle power metal bands because they often marry portentous musical ambitions with hackneyed Manowar-like posturing that only a 12-year-old could possibly buy into; Germany's Edguy, however, are clever enough to flip those tables by making it evident that they don't take themselves all that seriously. Eight albums into the quintet's career, Edguy have in many ways succeeded where genre daddies Helloween first bit the dust -- injecting ample doses of fun, on-stage glam-metal gymnastics, Scorpions-like face pulling, and unselfconscious humor into what is normally an outwardly austere musical style, and 2006's Rocket Ride is no exception. Blind Guardian fans have grown accustomed to waiting long periods between the band's studio albums, which these masters of German progressive power metal tend to deliver only every four years or so -- much like World Cups, curiously enough. The original title, Crank, would have been apt. Producer Gil Norton (Pixies, Echo & the Bunnymen) was brought in to toughen this band's sound and set them apart from the wave of U.K. upstarts who were pounding U.S. shores. That he did. But it's not necessarily progress; Talk Talk's master experimentalist, Tim Friese-Greene, gave Catherine Wheel's brilliant debut, Ferment, a dripping beauty, opulent textures illuminating barely hidden firepower. On even the most angry, aggressive tracks, such as "Texture" and "Shallow," this shimmering, shuddering mist was still ever-present. Many of those glistening touches have indeed been subtracted by Norton, and they're missed. That Chrome is still a terrific LP proves Catherine Wheel capable of eclipsing the overload.
