| | Butchering The Beatles: A Headbashing Tribute CD
Assembling tribute albums has grown in recent years into somewhat of a cottage industry, and most of these tributes quite truthfully perform better on paper than they do in execution. Butchering the Beatles, which brings together what are essentially heavy metal supergroups to tackle several Beatle tunes, fares a little better than most tribute albums, but it still falls way short of being anything like an essential or even necessary collection. Having Alice Cooper, Steve Vai, Duff McKagan, and Mikkey Dee tackle "Hey Bulldog," for instance, sure sounds like a cool idea, and it works to a degree, but in the end one gets the funny feeling that nothing has really been gained here, and the fact remains that no one sings a John Lennon song like John Lennon. Still there are some interesting pairings, like Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top and Def Leppard's Vivian Campbell giving "Revolution" a coat of hard rock paint, or Jack Blades and Tommy Shaw making sure the world knows what "Day Tripper" sounds like shot full of steroids and amped up to 11, a trick Kip Winger repeats for "Drive My Car." It's fun while it lasts, but when the whole set ends, there is no overwhelming need to hear it again. One does, however, feel like putting on the Beatles, which, when you think about it, is how a tribute album should make you feel when all is sung and done. ~ Steve Leggett Butchering The Beatles: A Headbashing Tribute Music Butchering The Beatles: A Headbashing Tribute Review

Butchering The Beatles: A Headbashing Tribute album
$38.19 REROUTE TO REMAIN is a 2002 release by Swedish power metal act In Flames.
Could this actually be European death metal's bid for a pop culture coup? In Flames already has a reputation as one of the best, most melodic death metal bands to come to power in the Euro-metal regime that has swept through countries like Sweden and Norway since the early to mid-'90s. However, with Reroute to Remain, Strömblad and the gang have now unexpectedly announced that they are also undoubtedly the most experimental of their brethren, and furthermore, that they have set their sights not just on broader horizons, but perhaps even complete world domination as well. Maybe that sounds like a huge exaggeration, but even one spin of the 14 songs here will prove that it very possibly may not be. It's obvious that the band has been listening heavily to the popular American metal (nu-metal, rap-metal, etc.) acts of the moment, because most of their venturing heads in that direction; in fact, it's almost as if catchy American-sounding choruses and certain nu-metal attributes have been added to the intense, throttling mixture of the band's already memorable songcraft. "Dark Signs," "Minus," and the ...

Butchering The Beatles: A Headbashing Tribute CD music
$18.99 New Wave of British Heavy Metal heavyweights (and mainstream metal failures) Diamond Head were long overdue for a best-of anthology, and chances are Sanctuary's two-disc Am I Evil?: Anthology, although not exactly perfect, is about as good as anyone could have hoped for. Except the unusually poppy single "Sweet and Innocent," all of Diamond Head's first and finest, nameless album (commonly referred to as Lightning to the Nations) and its essential B-sides ("Shoot Out the Lights," "Play It Loud," etc.) are paraded before the court here -- to the continued wonderment of all who may hear them. And for all of their inherent faults, the far less satisfying songs chosen from sophomore disaster Borrowed Time ("In the Heat of the Night," the title track, etc.) manage to acquit themselves ever so slightly in retrospect's benevolent glare. Not so the desperately unsalvageable submissions (and too many of them, let it be said) culled from confused third opus Canterbury, which remain ...
