| | Winter's Solstice: Silver Anniversary Edition CD (2001) Silver Anniversary Edt
Irelax Anywhere CD music
$6.15 This is part of Windham Hill Records "A Winter Solstice" series.
One of the most well known productions of the Windham Hill label, which basically invented new age music but prefers the term "contemporary instrumental," has been the WINTER'S SOLSTICE series. Perhaps inspired by the season-based recordings of George Winston, the SOLSTICE albums (which feature tunes from a variety of the label's artists) have always been not Christmas albums per se, but winter albums. Of course, a few Yuletide-oriented tunes do find their way onto this, the anniversary edition of the first volume in the series, but for the most part these are agreeable sonic meditations on a wintry state of mind by the likes of Barbara Higbie, Liz Story, and label honcho Will Ackerman himself. If you listen close enough, you can almost hear the snow falling.

| | David & Steve Gordon Garden Of Serenity II CD (1996)
Irelax Anywhere music CDs
$13.05 Some of the proceeds from the sale of GARDEN OF SERENITY II are donated to the Rainforest Action Network.
Brothers David and Steve Gordon were pioneers in composing relaxing music set to nature sounds, and with Garden of Serenity II, they return to territory charted ten years earlier, music which mixes environmental recordings (their own) with silver flute, shakuhachi flute, harp, piano, temple bells, koto, and wind chimes. This recording alternates between two calming "Zen Garden" variations and a pair of romantic arrangements of Claude Debussy's "Reverie," inspired by paintings of Monet. The Zen series, with its shakuhachi flute and refreshing brook, inspires images of the solitude of a formal Japanese garden. The "Reverie" variations on piano are even more relaxing, like floating down a gentle stream overhung with trees of songbirds. Thirty-minute cuts are included for full relaxation benefit, while those on a time budget can sample the five-minute versions. ~ Carol Wright
"Ahhh... Ten years after the release of their wildly popular Garden of Serenity, the Gordon's returned to this paradise and brought back stories of their journey, told with loving detail and exquisite beauty on Garden of Serenity II. The deeply peaceful sounds of flowing water and exotic songbirds graces this CD like beads of dew quivering and shimmering on a blade of grass as the dawn's sun shines gently down. Woven lusciously into the nature sounds are Shakuhauchi and silver flute melodies, temple bells, harp, Koto, piano and wind chimes, creating an earthy relaxing ambiance that is absolutely perfect for meditation, quiet contemplation, massage or as soothing background music while working or studying. Garden of Serenity II is divided into four parts, "Zen Garden Parts I and II," and "Monet's Garden Parts I and II". Total time is nearly 70 minutes of music. "Monet's Garden" features several gorgeous variations on Debussy's "Reverie," which will be instantly recognizable to many of you. I think I can safely say, without fear of contradiction, that Garden of Serenity II really ought not to ...

| | Manish Vyas Sattva CD (2003)
Irelax Anywhere album
$13.25 Singer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Manish Vyas had been recording for years, often in collaboration with his labelmate Prem Joshua. But Sattva is actually his first album as a solo artist, and it shows the growth and maturity that came from his years of work as a collaborator and accompanist. A virtuosic tabla and santoor player and a very fine singer, Vyas is also an excellent composer of both devotional and vaguely romantic songs. Here his emphasis is on devotional chants and songs of praise to Krishna, most of which are slow and contemplative, some of which have a slight edge of electronic funk. At the former extreme is "Karuna," a lovely unmetered song that Vyas improvised in the studio at an unplanned moment; at the latter end of the spectrum are the rippling "Tumi Bhaja Re Mana" and a beautiful setting of the mantra "Om Namo Narayana," which uses violin, voices, percussion, and understated electric bass. Very highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson
Manish Vyas learned to play tabla at the best address for this complicated Indian percussion instrument: Ustad Alla Rakha (the late father of Zakir Hussain). Born in India to a family of musicians, Manish performed for many years as a singer, percussionist and composer in traditional kirtan bands, gathering plenty of knowledge about traditional folk, bhajans and the ...
| | John La Barbera Band Big On The Wild Side CD (2004)
Irelax Anywhere CD music
$12.49 This outing by composer and arranger John La Barbera features Clay Jenkins (trumpet), Bud Shank (saxophone), and La Barbera's two talented brothers Pat (tenor saxophone) and Joe (drums). A smart mix of tunes is heard here, including colorful arrangements of Miles Davis's modal odyssey "So What" and Horace Silver's hard-bop chart "Mayreh." ON THE WILD SIDE also contains many compositions by La Barbera himself, including the airy bossa nova "Highland Crossing."
The Lennon/McCartney-penned "Eleanor Rigby" and Elmer Bernstein's title suite are the standout tracks on this album. The former is used mostly as a vehicle for solos, with each improvisation well navigated, and the tune culminates with an outstanding drum solo. "Walk on the Wild Side Suite" receives a torqued-up arrangement here, with Pat La Barbera's fascinating tenor solo combining ...
