There's no shortage of legendary producers in line to work with music world titans U2; when work with Rick Rubin broke off, Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois stepped in. The resulting NO LINE ON THE HORIZON, 2009's offering from the Irish rockers, continues in the grand U2 tradition, as soaring pop anthems like opening single "Get on Your Boots" pair with experimental melanges like "Tripoli," on a striking album featuring touches of all the albums come before, yet hinting at new worlds for Bono to conquer.

The CLAM DIP AND OTHER DELIGHTS EP was originally released in England in 1988 and featured more covers, including a stab at Foreigner's AOR standard, "Juke Box Hero." The U.S. version includes one cover and two originals not featured on the English version. CLAM DIP is vintage early Soul Asylum (and check out the cover art!).
"Chains" is a cover of an obscure new wave classic with a metronomic beat, Dave Pirner's slightly echoed vocals, and punchy, clipped guitar work from Dan Murphy. "Artificial Heart" is a story-song with canned vocals and a gruesome plot line about kidnapping and decapitation that suggests a punk version of the Velvet Underground's "The Gift." "Take it to the Root" is a Red Hot Chili Peppers-style metal/funk rave-up. Over the course of their career, Low's glacially beautiful music has gradually melted into something much more accessible and intimate. The thaw culminates on Things We Lost in the Fire; despite its brooding title, it's the group's loveliest, most approachable collection of songs yet. Voluptuous strings, softly fuzzy guitars, and propulsive percussion suffuse songs like the sweetly melancholy opener "Sunflower" and the slo-mo pop of "Dinosaur Act" and "July" with a warmth and direction that Low's best work has always hinted at. Even the album's darkest moments, such as the tense, implosive "Whitetail," have more emotional urgency, heightened by Alan and Mimi's close, brooding harmonies. Yet Mimi's airy solo on the spare, undulating "Laser Beam" is equally spine tingling. Things We Lost in the Fire also features more of Low's understated stylistic experiments: The slightly jazzy harmonies and tempo of "Medicine Magazines" add a bit of swing to the group's usually steady rhythms, while "Kind of Girl" delves into earthy yet ethereal chamber folk.
