Live In Atlanta
$8.39 If you were to compare the J. Geils Band's 1970 self-titled debut to their final album with singer Peter Wolf, 1981's FREEZE FRAME, you could easily be fooled into thinking they were two completely different bands. Although they'd later become best known for chart-storming pop-rock, the J. Geils Band started out as a straight-ahead blues-rock band, much like their mentors the Rolling Stones and their peers ZZ Top and Aerosmith.

| | Cactus Restrictions CD (1971)
Live In Atlanta
$9.55 With a mixture of members from Vanilla Fudge, Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, and the Amboy Dukes, it's hard to believe that Cactus didn't really succeed in their time. Often derided for being second-rate boogie rock, the band simply did what it did, and part of the allure of the style is its sloppy, second-rate nature. This 1971 release may not see the band at their peak, but it surely showcases the occasionally thundering rhythm section of Tim Bogert and Carmine Appice. Why a song like "Token Chokin'" was never a hit and why it has yet to be embraced by the classic rock-loving public is a complete mystery. The song is some of the most heels-up, thundering, so-brainless-it's-genius rock that has ever been to tape. It's complete with big guitars, big sing-alongs, and a bass-and-drum combo that could knock out windows. Somebody needs to revive this track. Songs like "Evil" and "Sweet Little Sixteen" are all scorching guitars and long-haired riffing. It's a testament to the blues-inspired power they could surely muster up onstage. Other tracks seem to fall apart like the opener, "Restrictions," and "Guiltless Glider," which starts off thick and heavy á la Blue Oyster ...
| | Robin Trower Seven Moons CD (2008) Digipak
Live In Atlanta
$12.89 Jack Bruce must have enjoyed his 2005 get-together with Cream so much that, when Clapton and Baker were unwilling to continue the collaboration, he rang up Robin Trower to renew the brief power trio fling they had in the mid-'80s. The Trower-Bruce pairing had released only two albums, B.L.T. and Truce, and was dormant since 1982, so this 2007 reunion was somewhat of a continuation of the project, albeit one separated by a quarter century. The results impressively continue where Truce left off, as Bruce brings his distinctive croon/moan to bluesy, riff-oriented tunes dominated by Trower's silvery guitar runs. Gary Husband fills the drum slot adequately if inconspicuously, but his contributions are mixed so far under Bruce's vocals and Trower's guitar that they are secondary. The previous two releases called in Trower's old Procol Harum lyricist Keith Reid and Bruce collaborator Peter Brown to write the words, but Bruce and Trower pen these 11 songs without outside assistance. Most tunes such as "Lives of Clay," a barely concealed rewrite of Cream's "Politician" lick, revisit familiar territory, and clearly these guys are not out to expand any boundaries. Bruce, who has had serious ...
| | & The Mysterians Cameo Parkway 1966-1967: The Best Of ? & The Mysterians CD (2005)
Live In Atlanta
$9.59 Though most people remember ? & the Mysterians solely for their one enduring hit, "96 Tears," the frat-band staple that mixed garage rock with Tex-Mex via a monomaniacal organ riff, they actually laid down plenty of other memorable tracks in their initial lifespan. Most, including the original version of their hit, were, incredibly, unavailable on CD for decades making this 2005 reissue ...
| | Waving Not Drowning Tabaran CD (1990) (Import) Bonus DVD; Australia
Live In Atlanta
$27.19 The acclaimed 1988 album from Not Drowning But Waving includes the title track and "Kiap Song."
The reissue special editoin includes a bonus DVD of short films accompanying each song (PAL only).
Invited to visit Papua New Guinea, and collaborate with local musicians (particularly vocalist Telek and his partners in the Moab Stringband), Australian eclectics Not Drowning, Waving produced an album that combines rock and pop textures, ambient production, traditional Papuan material, and then-contemporary PNG musical approaches, though the liner notes warn against any illusion of ethnic musical purity. The effect is often as haunting and entrancing as the best parts of Claim, NDW's U.S. debut, though the best moments all steer clear of the more traditional pop approach in effect on a few tracks. It is these few tracks that weaken Tabaran overall, impeding the musical flow to no good purpose. Countering these more banal incidences are moments of great beauty, including the closing "Funeral Chant." It should be noted that there is a hidden track 9« minutes after the end of the listed cuts, a brief but amusing stringband outing. Overall, highly recommended. ~ Steven E. McDonald
