This hefty double album often sounds more like a compilation than a coherent whole, with musical ideas bouncing frantically back and forth. Nevertheless, in typical Cure style, KISS ME, KISS ME, KISS ME successfully combines catchy pop with bitter despair. Through 17 immensely sensual songs, Robert Smith is at his most poetic ("strange as angels, dancing in the deepest ocean, twisting in the water, you're just like a dream") and vitriolic ("get your fucking voice out of my head...I never wanted any of this, I wish you were dead"). The joyous pop of "Just Like Heaven" and "The Perfect Girl" still delights, and the frisson provided by "Shiver And Shake" reinforces the physical nature of this collection.

Alternative Press (p.200) - "[With] the heartfelt 'Just Like Heaven,' one of the classic alt-rock singles of the 1980s." Magnet (p.106) - "Smith pens the prettiest pop, unleashes seven minutes of sitar-driven stonerdom, uses accordions to punctuate Parisian travelogues, plays with psychedelic Hendrixian guitar textures and -- as always -- lets bassist Simon Gallup have all the best riffs and melodies." Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me CD music
$12.65 IS THIS DESIRE? was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance.
Author of a brand of feminine angst that far predates the Alanis nation, Polly Jean Harvey brings a heretofore-unseen level of drama to the pop form. She is possessed of a rage that is finely focused, and an artistic sensibility that injects her music with a disarming, highly literate edge. Her fifth album, IS THIS DESIRE? finds Harvey delivering on the promise of her earlier albums: without losing any of the rage of her earlier, more guitar-driven work, she further refines her psychotic tales of obsession and despair, all the while laying down a sonic groundwork which is always experimental and unexpected, including a heavy dose of electronica.
Harvey's trademark whisper-to-a-scream vocal style is present throughout IS THIS DESIRE. "The Sky Lit Up" sees a casual, almost spoken vocal erupt slowly into an otherworldy wail, accented perfectly by wild guitar textures. "Catherine" is a sublime, evocative ballad, whose vitriolic lyrics are juxtaposed against a ...

Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me music CDs
$17.79 Despite the great work of many excellent reissue labels, there remain hundreds of sides from the rock & roll era that are unheard outside of a small coterie. The German Buffalo Bop label isn't the heaviest hitter, but it knows its way around an appealing thematic compilation, and Sugar Doll unearths no less than 30 interesting sides from female rocksters and popsters. This is seriously obscure music, the area where chart positions are virtually nonexistent and knowledge of the songs known only to those who collect 45s. (For a good gauge, consider that the most famous name here is Linda Scott, who barely cracked the Top 40.) As ...
