On his eighth album, Clint Black, the thinking man's country celeb, is at his most dynamic. He moves energetically through a repertoire ranging from uptempo country rockers such as the title track to sweet, romantic ballads like "That Something in My Life," with endless surprises in between, including the bluesy "Bitter Side of Sweet." Some of the best material here is collaborative; "Our Kind of Love," with the assistance of Alison Krauss and Union Station, effectively examines the bluegrass roots of country music, and Black and Krauss's harmonies are particularly wonderful. One of the most spectacular songs on NOTHIN' BUT THE TAILLIGHTS is the totally acoustic, low-key "Ode to Chet," which features some of country music's best guitar players, including Chet Atkins himself.
Engineers: Kevin Beamish, Julian King, Gary Paczosa.

Entertainment Weekly (8/15/97, p.75) - "...Other than the spirited title tune and a bluegrass ballad with Alison Krauss, this is the dullest set of songs since, well, his last album." - Rating: C+ Nothin' But The Tailights Music Clint Black Nothin' But The Tailights Songs Nothin' But The Tailights Review

Vince Gill's THE KEY is essentially a crash course on the history of country music. Inspired by the death of his father to return to the classic country of his youth, Gill has created a primer of traditional country styles. Each song highlights a different style, from Western swing and the Bakersfield sound to waltzes and great male/female duets. But Gill's talents as a guitarist and vocalist keep THE KEY hanging together as a unified whole.

A four-disc box set of all new material, nearly all of it Gill originals, THESE DAYS is possibly the widest-ranging country album of the modern era. The four discs are thematically and stylistically arranged. Disc one, WORKIN' ON A BIG CHILL, is a 1960s-flavored rock-and-roll album that recalls Bob Dylan's late '60s work with the Band and features Bonnie Bramlett's vocals on several songs. Disc two, THE REASON WHY, is a modern pop record in the style of Shania ...
