$10.29 WWII. The "Blue Max", a coveted medal for achievement in flying, is ruthlessly sought by Peppard, a poor-boy German soldier who climbs out of the trenches and into the aristocratic air force. He is met with prejudice by the other contestants, wealthy snobs who look down upon his low economic stature. When he claims the title, he earns the respect of the General and the General's wife (Andress), who wants to repay him in ways that the General might not appreciate. Peppard, on the other hand, does. Fantastic aerial combat highlights the film, although the scenes between the two lovers don't hurt matters much.

Third Man movie DVD
$10.49 This relatively little-known film is widely hailed by fans of the macabre. Truly ahead of its time, NIGHTMARE ALLEY is set in the gritty, surrealistic world of traveling carnivals, where eccentric people of all possible varieties interact on a daily basis. In a departure from his usual roles as the Hollywood leading man, handsome Tyrone Power plays a morally questionable circus apprentice determined to climb the carnival ladder no matter what the price. Powers shows immense range in what was arguably his finest role ever as the sometimes unrecognizably scruffy circus man with a liking for the bottle. Director Edmund Goulding (DARK VICTORY) gives the carnival setting a dark, somber feel that contradicts the film's more upbeat ending. In spite of this ending tacked on by the studio system, NIGHTMARE ALLEY remains with the viewer even after it's over, haunting them with its bleak images and melancholy mood.

$21.09 Japanese auteur Kinji Fukasaku examines the trauma of World War II in his home country in the docu-drama UNDER THE FLAG OF THE RISING SUN (GUNKI HATAMEKU MOTONI). Taking his cue from HIROSHIMA, MON AMOUR, Fukasaku combines a fictional drama with documentary segments illustrating and reinforcing the film's central themes. Mrs. Togashi (Sachiko Hidari) had a husband who was court martialed and executed in the final days of World War II, and as a result receives no pension from the government. Many years on, the army will still not tell her the circumstances of his death, so she embarks on an investigation of her own. Conducting interviews with a number of her husband's former comrades, she discovers a RASHOMON-like story of both heroism and villainy, bravery and cowardice. Suggesting that perhaps the truth is lost in the chaos of wartime, UNDER THE FLAG OF THE RISING SUN is a powerful examination of a terrible moment in Japanese history.

| | You Are There - Invasion/ D-Day/ The Liberation Of Paris DVD (2004)
Third Man review
$7.75 Airing from 1953-1957, YOU ARE THERE was a television reworking of an earlier radio series that recreated noteworthy events in history. Hosted by prominent newscasters such as Walter Cronkite, Charles Collingwood, and Mike Wallace, the show had a team of excellent writers, many of whom, significantly, were blacklisted in Hollywood by the House of Un-American Activities Committee during the era of Mcarthyism. The show, directed by Sidney Lumet (SERPICO, DOG DAY AFTERNOON), was used to combat the anti-Communist witch hunt that was going on at the time, painting a noble picture of the human spirit prevailing against oppressive forces. Telling stories from history as though they were occurring contemporaneously, prominent figures were interviewed about the circumstances of events. This installment conentrates on France during the second world war.
