5 stars Great TV from the early years
Solid performances from Michael Rennie. You can see where programs like the Saint, the Avengers, I, Spy, and so on developed from. Not sure why Jonathan Harris went on to Lost in Space, though. Or Werner Klemperer to Hogan's Heroes.

Allen and Albert Hughes, best known for their work as feature-film directors (MENACE II SOCIETY, DEAD PRESIDENTS), present this revealing documentary that focuses on the myths and realities associated with the black urban pimp. Featuring rare, candid interviews with actual pimps, the film contains a brutal honesty that makes for quite an enlightening viewing experience. As they have done with their previous work, the Hughes brothers pull no punches in bringing their subject matter to the screen. AMERICAN PIMP is at once an important historical document and an entertaining documentary. Closed Captioned; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack Spanish

Jonathan Zimmermann, a German picture-framer, is dying of a rare blood disease. Despite his illness, the happily married Jonathan does his best to live each day to the fullest with his wife and child. But when Tom Ripley, a cunning American gangster, learns of Jonathan's sickness, he convinces the dying man--deeply concerned about his family's financial future--to work as a hit man for a big payoff. Will Jonathan get in over his head by making a deal that could ruin what's left of his life? German director Wim Wenders delivers a sensitive, film-noirish tribute to the American gangster film, based on the novel RIPLEY'S GAME by Patricia Highsmith. An American sociopath sells forge paintings in Germany. An idealistic art restorer is dying of a rare blood disease. Sociopath Ripley arranges for the desperate family man to carry out a high-paying mob hit and the two forge an uneasy bond. Stars Dennis Hopper and Bruno Ganz, directed by Wim Wenders.

WWII. The "Blue Max", a coveted medal for achievement in flying, is ruthlessly sought by Peppard, a poor-boy German soldier who climbs out of the trenches and into the aristocratic air force. He is met with prejudice by the other contestants, wealthy snobs who look down upon his low economic stature. When he claims the title, he earns the respect of the General and the General's wife (Andress), who wants to repay him in ways that the General might not appreciate. Peppard, on the other hand, does. Fantastic aerial combat highlights the film, although the scenes between the two lovers don't hurt matters much. Closed Captioned; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack French; Soundtrack Spanish

This relatively little-known film is widely hailed by fans of the macabre. Truly ahead of its time, NIGHTMARE ALLEY is set in the gritty, surrealistic world of traveling carnivals, where eccentric people of all possible varieties interact on a daily basis. In a departure from his usual roles as the Hollywood leading man, handsome Tyrone Power plays a morally questionable circus apprentice determined to climb the carnival ladder no matter what the price. Powers shows immense range in what was arguably his finest role ever as the sometimes unrecognizably scruffy circus man with a liking for the bottle. Director Edmund Goulding (DARK VICTORY) gives the carnival setting a dark, somber feel that contradicts the film's more upbeat ending. In spite of this ending tacked on by the studio system, NIGHTMARE ALLEY remains with the viewer even after it's over, haunting them with its bleak images and melancholy mood. Japanese auteur Kinji Fukasaku examines the trauma of World War II in his home country in the docu-drama UNDER THE FLAG OF THE RISING SUN (GUNKI HATAMEKU MOTONI). Taking his cue from HIROSHIMA, MON AMOUR, Fukasaku combines a fictional drama with documentary segments illustrating and reinforcing the film's central themes. Mrs. Togashi (Sachiko Hidari) had a husband who was court martialed and executed in the final days of World War II, and as a result receives no pension from the government. Many years on, the army will still not tell her the circumstances of his death, so she embarks on an investigation of her own. Conducting interviews with a number of her husband's former comrades, she discovers a RASHOMON-like story of both heroism and villainy, bravery and cowardice. Suggesting that perhaps the truth is lost in the chaos of wartime, UNDER THE FLAG OF THE RISING SUN is a powerful examination of a terrible moment in Japanese history. Third Man review
DVD $7.75  Top 500
Airing from 1953-1957, YOU ARE THERE was a television reworking of an earlier radio series that recreated noteworthy events in history. Hosted by prominent newscasters such as Walter Cronkite, Charles Collingwood, and Mike Wallace, the show had a team of excellent writers, many of whom, significantly, were blacklisted in Hollywood by the House of Un-American Activities Committee during the era of Mcarthyism. The show, directed by Sidney Lumet (SERPICO, DOG DAY AFTERNOON), was used to combat the anti-Communist witch hunt that was going on at the time, painting a noble picture of the human spirit prevailing against oppressive forces. Telling stories from history as though they were occurring contemporaneously, prominent figures were interviewed about the circumstances of events. This installment conentrates on France during the second world war. Closed Captioned; Standard Screen; Soundtrack English
