(2 Customer Reviews)
Given the band's first two hard-hitting albums, not to mention the members' previous tenure in the seminal post-hardcore outfit At the Drive-In, Sparta's heavy indie-rock pedigree was pretty firmly established by the time THREES was released in 2006. It's a bit surprising, then, that the album flirts with mainstream rock, offering up tunes that brim with powerful, anthemic choruses and the passionate grandeur of acts like U2. But Sparta never sound forced or out of their element. On the contrary, THREES weighs tight musical muscle with melody and accessibility, building on the band's post-hardcore past while moving confidently towards a crossover future.
Sparta: Jim Ward, Keeley Davis (vocals, guitar); Matt Miller (bass guitar); Tony Hajjar (drums).
Spin (p.104) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Sparta have evolved, with a melodic approach and a postdepression, fist-pumping attitude." Entertainment Weekly (p.72) - "Their third and most polished full-length matches intricate guitar jousting with a melodic stickiness recalling a punkier U2." -- Grade: B Uncut (p.116) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]here's mammoth hooks and meaningful shouting galore here, most effectively on opener 'Untreatable Disease'..." Alternative Press (p.182) - "Behind Ward's expanding register, Sparta finally seem intent on realizing their destiny as an arena-filling, life-changing band." CMJ (p.41) - "The addition of guitarist Keeley Davis...and singer Jim Ward's vastly improved vocal range propel the band's transcendence and rebirth." Threes Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) Not Porcelain, part II? They are like-minded to Mars Volta just the way that this disc sounds. This disc ranks above Brand New (The) Devil & God are Raging inside Me. What's the buzz behind Taking Back Control? It's the first charted single since Air off of Wiretap Scars.
I state this album clear. It's not a revisit of Porcelain after all. It doesn't even come close! Phew! Relief, at last! Submitted by Hmmm ... (Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Sparta is back and better than ever!! Hello world, you might have forgotton about a band from El Paso, Texas but you will soon find out what a fantastic band Sparta is. Sparta's first album, Wiretap Scars, was a great debut album, and Threes has expanded that formula to create one of the best rock records I've heard in many years. When Sparta replaced their original guitar player, I had my fears that their next album might be a big flop. Boy was I wrong! There is such a diverse arrangement of rock songs in this record, that it has plenty for everyone. If you give this album a chance, you will not regret it. Threes songs
$8.49 (MP3 Available for Download) Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24-karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box.
"You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had" and "The Same Thing" did not appear on the original version of FOLK SINGER. They were recorded at a separate session in April 1964, three months after FOLK SINGER was released.
The title and cover photo of this 1963 recording were an attempt to cash in on the burgeoning American folk revival, but this is pure acoustic blues. Muddy began his career as a Robert Johnson-style solo acoustic performer, and the tunes on FOLK SINGER ...

| | New York Voices Sing, Sing, Sing CD (2000)
Threes album
$6.79 (MP3 Available for Download) You have to admire New York Voices' diversity -- this is a jazz vocal group that has embraced everything from modal post-bop and Brazilian jazz to Stevie Wonder pearls. And how many artists have devoted an entire album to jazz interpretations of Paul Simon tunes? Not everything the Voices have recorded is great, but more often than not, their sense of adventure and open-mindedness have served them well. After paying tribute to pop-rocker Simon in 1997, the Voices make big band music the main focus of Sing, Sing, Sing. This time, they are backed by a big band and turn their attention to gems associated with swing icons like Benny Goodman ("Sing, Sing, Sing," "Don't Be That Way"), Duke Ellington ("In A Mellow Tone"), Woody Herman ("Early Autumn"), and Artie Shaw ("Stardust"). Although many of these classics came out of the Swing Era, Sing, Sing, Sing also has its share of post-World War II gems. Ralph Burns' lovely "Early Autumn" is a gem that Herman recorded in 1948, when he was exploring bop with his Second Herd and the Four Brothers. And "Orange Colored Sky," which was a major hit for Nat "King" Cole in 1950, is quite relevant to the CD's big band theme because Cole recorded it with the Stan Kenton Orchestra. This CD is a major departure from the Voices' Simon tribute, but considering how flexible they have been, it isn't surprising that they would do something completely different this time. Sing, Sing, Sing is a rewarding addition to their catalogue. ~ ...

| | Wizz Jones Legendary Me CD (2006)
Threes music CDs
$14.19 The Legendary Me by guitarist Wizz Jones was his third offering released in November of 1970 in Great Britain; it was issued by the Village Thing label run by Ian Anderson (later founding editor of Folk Roots magazine) and Gef Lucena of SayDisc. Jones' guitaristry was trademark, full of blues, old world modes and lyric lines, burning finger-picking, and a sense of humor to go with it all; he is often compared to John Renbourn and Bert Jansch, but he's better than both and is in the same league as the legendary Davy Graham. As for the cuts themselves, the highlights include no less than eight by British artist, and close friend of Jones, Alan Turnbridge, a fine read of Rev. Gary Davis' "Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning," the traditional "Willie Moore," and a single original by Jones, "If Only I'd Known." Jones is a better interpreter than a songwriter, but the off-kilter, semi-ragtime ...
