Live On Tour
$16.95 Includes recordings originally released on Eastern, Columbia, Buddah, Checker, and Revue.
Eddie & Ernie's discography is quite a diaspora, spanning about a decade, 15 singles, almost as many labels, and some releases under names other than Eddie & Ernie. This CD does an admirable job of pulling together 24 tracks (seven of them previously unissued) from their disperse output, forming a good though not great collection of punchy period soul with good harmonizing. It doesn't matter a great deal, but a few of the cuts weren't billed to Eddie & Ernie: there's a 1963 Eddie & Ernie single, both sides of a 1967 single by Ernie Johnson, one side of a 1967 45 by Eddie Campbell, a 1964 side they did under the name the New Bloods, a previously unreleased early-'70s number by their early-'70s group Phoenix Express, and a 1962 single by Little Worley and the Drops on which the pair sang backup. Unsurprisingly, the stylistic range is wide enough that it's difficult to summarize. Eddie & Ernie sang deep soul-styled songs that might appeal to fans of Sam & Dave, but they also did some lusher, poppier close-harmonized duos that ...

| | Dolly Parton Those Were The Days CD (2005)
Live On Tour
$15.05 Like fellow country legend Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton was remarkably prolific during the first years of the 21st century, and 2005's THOSE WERE THE DAYS features Parton sharing Nelson's penchant for guest-star-studded albums. The general theme is Parton's favorite songs of the 1960s and '70s, with additional artists ranging from Porter Wagoner, her former duet partner, to singer/songwriter Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens). Throughout the disc, Parton's crystal-clear voice shines as bright as ever, meshing particularly well with the record's younger performers, including Australian country-rock hero Keith Urban (the playful "Twelfth of Never") and the bluegrass trio Nickel Creek (a lilting rendition of Bob Dylan's oft-covered "Blowin' in the Wind"). While THOSE WERE THE DAYS isn't quite as consistent as HALOS & HORNS or LITTLE SPARROW (largely due to so many cooks in the kitchen), it is a charming album that's sure to please fans of Dolly and the other artists represented here.

| | Mark David Manders Cannonball CD (2005)
Live On Tour
$12.95 Texas singer/songwriter Mark David Manders is something of a legend in his home state, where his live shows have built him a solid core of fans. Cannonball comes on the heels of the somewhat more introspective Highs and Lows, and finds him returning to his honky tonk roots with a supporting cast that includes fiddler Heather Morris, backup singer Blondie Chaplin (known for her work with the Rolling Stones), and several members of Bonnie Raitt's band. The resulting sound is surprisingly light and largely acoustic, with some hot electric guitar picking and Hammond B-3 organ thrown in for good measure. Manders' voice isn't the most powerful in the world, but his songs are impressive: the title track is presented in two versions, an "Austin Mix" and a "Los Angeles Mix," both of which are jauntily attractive in subtly different ways, and "Three Fingers Tequila" is a bar band singalong that has been an audience favorite for years. Several other songs (notably "Good Enough for Me" and "Eight Track") are pleasant without being exceptional, ...
| | Martina Mcbride Timeless CD (2005)
Live On Tour
$8.99 While many of her contemporaries (including Trisha Yearwood and Patty Loveless) imbued their 2005 releases with a traditional bent, Martina McBride went one step further and recorded TIMELESS, an entire album of country classics, many of which date back to the 1950s and '60s. McBride's commitment to these songs is evident both on the disc's extensive liner notes (which present many facts about the tunes, such as who originally performed each one), as well as in her soulful, stirring performances. While every track here benefits from her nuanced delivery, McBride shines the brightest on a buoyant version of Ray Price's "I'll Be There" (with additional singing by Dan Tyminski and Rhonda Vincent), a swooning take on Don Gibson's "I Can't Stop Loving You," and a delicate rendition of Johnny Cash's "I Still Miss Someone" (with harmony vocals by Dolly Parton). For those seeking vintage songs channeled through one of the finest interpretive voices in 21st-century country, TIMELESS is ideal.

This set had me worried. Some of the group improvising is so sparse and meandering that it almost sounds as if the musicians are lost, or too shy to play much. However, just when one is ready to give up on this project as a lost effort, one of the musicians gets the momentum flowing and the others follow with their own comments. By the time the quintet performs the closing "Broken," the music ...
