Eric Wright's classic novel about a boy and his dog is resurrected in this charming adaptation from Charles Sturridge (BRIDESHEAD REVISITED), which is a far cry from the Americanized TV show of the 1950s. Unfolding in Yorkshire, England, just before WWII, the film makes the most of its low budget and is quite successful at evoking the era. Joe (Jonathan Mason) is the only son of a poor miner, Sam (John Lynch), and his steadfast wife, Sarah (Samantha Morton, MORVERN CALLAR). Joe's story is paralleled by that of Priscilla (Hester Odgers), the poker-faced granddaughter of the ostentatiously wealthy duke (a grand Peter O'Toole). Priscilla takes a liking to Lassie when she spots the dog in the street. The duke tries to buy Lassie from her family, and when the mine is shut down, Sam has no choice but to accept his offer. Lassie's allegiance, however, is not so easily transferred, and she constantly finds ways to escape the confines of her new home, even when she is taken to Scotland. Undertaking the long journey back to Joe, Lassie makes friends--and a few enemies--along the way, including a charming Peter Dinklage as Rowlie the roving puppeteer. The photography of the English and Scottish countryside is truly breathtaking, and Lassie is eternally endearing as the symbol of freedom, loyalty, and friendship--virtues that are valued and epitomized in the film by young and old, rich and poor. This is a film in which you can always tell the bad guys because they don't like dogs.

Lassie Reviews:

"[A]bout as good as a LASSIE movie can be. Taking after the original 1940 novel, the film's set in pre-WWII Britain..." -- Grade: A--- Gregory Kirschling, Entertainment Weekly

3 stars out of 5 -- "Writer/director Charles Sturridge understands not only the overlying emotions but also the underlying currents of the drama....The cast is strong."-- Kim Williamson, Box Office

Digitally remastered by Peter Mew (2000, Abbey Road Studios, London, England). For the six years the Beatles were recording for Capitol Records, the Fab Four ascended to top of the American and British charts an astonishing 27 times. This single-disc compilation brings those hits together in one place to span every phase of the foursome's highly influential career. Early Merseybeat-flavored sides like "Love Me Do" (the band's first Stateside hit), "She Loves You," and "I Want To Hold Your Hand" struck a chord early on with hordes of screaming teens. Unfortunately, this found the band temporarily dismissed as mere teen idols despite these numbers coming as a result of the vaunted Lennon/McCartney songwriting partnership. The timeless "Yesterday" struck a worldwide chord (and subsequently became one of the most played songs of all time) and Liverpool's favorite sons soon found themselves shifting gears. They were soon dabbling with flower power ("All You Need is Love"), character-driven storytelling ("Eleanor Rigby"), and allowing glimpses behind the Beatles curtain ("Hey Jude," "The Ballad of John & Yoko"). By the time "The Long and Winding Road" became the Beatles' chart-topping swan song, popular music's landscape had been permanently altered. Includes a 30-page color booklet documenting artwork for all the number one singles recorded by The Beatles. Recorded at Apple, Olympic Sound, Trident and Abbey Road Studios, London, England; Pathe ...

CD $20.29  4 stars
With ME & A MONKEY ON THE MOON, Felt's Lawrence announced that, as he'd completed his objective of releasing ten albums and ten singles in ten years, Felt was over (actually there were eleven singles, but that would have wrecked the symmetry of the thing). By this time, Lawrence was the only original member of the band, though Martin Duffy had been around since 1985's IGNITE THE SEVEN CANNONS. (ME & A MONKEY also features backing vocals by Rose McDowall, who used to sing for Strawberry Switchblade.) Album highlights include "Budgie Jacket," which features a weirdly dispassionate first-person lyric about child sexual abuse, and a baroque guitar line that recalls those of Maurice Deebank, the band's original guitarist. "New Day Dawning," which begins as a sparse, sinister confessional, bursting into an uncharacteristically cheerful final two and a half minutes worth of wheeling and soaring guitar solos. "Down an August Path," meanwhile, lyrically walks the fine line between unbearably sad and faintly optimistic that Lawrence has always made it his business to tread. ME & A MONKEY ON THE MOON ends Felt's career ...

This DVD presents the artist just as she was and in a way that was never possible before the invention of the first silent 16mm cameras in the 1960s - just in time for her. This DVD presents du Pre as seen through the eyes, the ears, and the words of the people who knew her best. Between those 2 films, the DVD contains a montage of images of du Pre and Daniel Barenboim taken ...

Hairspray DVD  (2007) Full Screen

Lassie movie DVD
DVD $8.79  3.3 stars Top 500
Originally written and directed by filmmaker John Waters in 1988, and then put on Broadway, the camp musical HAIRSPRAY could easily have run its course with viewers. But thanks to playful direction, flashy costumes, over-the-top performances, and a positive message of peace, this newest spin proves to be yet another enjoyable incarnation. Set in 1960s Baltimore, the story follows a plump young girl named Tracy Turnblad (played by impressive newcomer Nikki Blonski) on an amazing journey as her dream of dancing on the popular Corny Collins Show becomes a reality. The local television program is a shiny spectacle spear-headed by Corny Collins (James Marsden), a gang of young dancers, and producer Velma Von Tussle (Michelle Pfeiffer), a seductress ice queen whose manipulative ways ensure her daughter Amber (Brittany Snow) gets more than her fair share of screen time as one of the show's stars. When Tracy shows up at an open call, Velma can barely contain her rage, and sets out to rid the show of Tracy and the talented black dancers who make up the show's popular "Negro Day." Thus begins a war of talent and a battle for justice, with those in favor of integration meeting many obstacles along the way. While less out-there than Waters's original, the film still contains some very quirky humor. John Travolta playing Tracy's overweight mother may seem an odd concept at first, but in this context it works. Scenes that would ordinarily be cheesy are made more interesting due to the odd dynamic between Christopher Walken and John Travolta playing man and wife. As the two dance and woo one another, the strange smile on Travolta's lipsticked lips and the grace of Walken's dancing will be sure to fascinate viewers. Viewers should also watch for cameos by Ricki Lake, and by John Waters as a Baltimore streaker. With all the wacky comedy, it's often easy to forget that the meat of HAIRSPRAY is a battle over racial integration. The film manages to create some touching moments in the midst of sparkling musical numbers. It's 1962 and change is in the air in Baltimore. Tracy Turnblad, a girl with big hair and big dreams, has only one passion in life - to dance on 'The Corny Collins Show.' When her chance arrives, she grooves her way into instant stardom and the eyes of teen-dream Link Larkin (Zac Efron). But with the program's scheming stage manager (Michelle Pfeiffer) against her, trend-setting Tracy will need ...
