#1 Pop 60'S Hits album
$14.45 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn ...
| | Them Crooked Vultures CD (2009)
#1 Pop 60'S Hits CD music
$11.17 Often, supergroups wind up dominated by one particular personality - think Eric Clapton in Derek & the Dominos, Jack White in the Raconteurs -- which makes the egalitarianism of Them Crooked Vultures all the more remarkable. Of course, when it comes down to it, it's a group of three natural-born collaborators: John Paul Jones, the old studio pro who gravitated toward provocative partners after Led Zeppelin's demise, teaming up with R.E.M. as easily as he did with avant-queen Diamanda Galas and nu-folkster ...

$8.85 Elsewhere, Knopfler entertains a host of famous friends throughout a slew of tasty tracks. Van Morrison duets on the laid-back "The Last Laugh" while Squeeze's Chris Difford and Glen Tilbrook add harmonies to the nostalgic twang of "Silvertown." The most impressive cameo comes from famed bluegrass fiddler Aubrey Haynie whose playing fuses with ...
| | Bobby Darin Aces Back To Back CD (2004) With DVD
#1 Pop 60'S Hits songs
$15.85 Includes bonus DVD featuring performances and documentary footage.
Filling out the CD are some marginal odds and ends, including three folky tunes from a 1971 live album; a couple of inessential folk-rock-pop songs from rare late-'60s releases on Darin's own Direction label; a studio demo of "Dream Lover"; and a few standards with trad jazz backing that he did on a radio series for the American Dairy Association. It's wholly in keeping, however, with the character of a release that pastes together scraps from Darin's whole career, none of which stand with his most enduring work. ~ Richie Unterberger
Aimed toward the hardcore rather than the average Bobby Darin fan, this unusual package features one music CD with 20 rare performances, and a separate bonus DVD with footage from early-'70s television and excerpts of an unissued early-'60s documentary Darin was making about his own life. Given the obvious effort that went into finding and repackaging this material, it's surprising that nowhere on the sleeve or in the 24-page booklet does it say when and where any ...

#1 Pop 60'S Hits music CDs
$15.79 On her debut U.S. release, the U.K. folk singer Lou Rhodes performs deceptively simple songs against a constantly shifting instrumental backdrop, incorporating Asian stringed instruments, exotic percussion, and unfussy acoustic textures. On tracks such as the erotic "Tremble" and the beautiful "Save Me," her voice is both fragile and earthily sexy, with an inner toughness that sets her apart from the run-of-the-mill sensitive singer-songwriter.
Lou Rhodes is best known as the outrageously distinctive and talented vocalist from the electronic duo Lamb (with Andy Barlow). Beloved One was released on her own Infinite Bloom label in the U.K. in 2006, and was short-listed for England's distinctive and prestigious Mercury Prize. Beloved One stands in stark contrast to Rhodes' work with Lamb. More often than not she's accompanied by an acoustic guitar -- her own -- strings, minimal organic percussion, a piano here and there, acoustic double bass, and more. Yeah: radically different. Rhodes being the guarded and private person she is, reading too much into this set would be a mistake. That said, both her marriage to Crispin Robinson and her professional partnership with Barlow in Lamb ended within the same year. That's enough of a double whammy to send anyone scrambling for cover. Rhodes, however, digs deep into the blessings of modern life. From "Each Moment New," the set's opening track, there is an aesthetic at work: one of naked honesty, carefully regarded optimism, and the courage to look forward while treasuring what it took to arrive in the present. Despite its natural sounding overtones -- and the cover, which is a bit of a pisser since the U.K.'s cover (now on the back of the booklet, so just turn it over) was so much more moving and beautiful -- this is no granola hippie freak folk record. The woman who sings about pain being necessary for rebirth, for death being necessary for resurrection, that blessings lie in each day and the only thing that matters is love, all this comes through without maudlin sentiment or glib platitudes to the cosmos. In fact, these songs are rife with the hard truth of self-discovery, feeling as if they were written in the moment of it. "Tremble," ...
