Little Axe is guitarist and singer Skip McDonald, but it's also much more than that. It is, in practice, a virtual reunion of the Sugarhill Gang -- the rhythm section responsible for the grooves underlying such paleo-hip-hop classics as "Rapper's Delight" and "White Lines" -- and therefore also a virtual reunion of Tackhead, the pioneering avant funk outfit that brought the Sugarhill Gang together with British producer Adrian Sherwood and vocalists Gary Clail and Bernard Fowler. In the Little Axe context, though, the focus is squarely on McDonald and on his overriding passion: vintage blues. Imagine a Delta blues aesthetic (spare, rural, and stark), and then imagine it thickened with additional instrumental layers and twisted with dubwise atmospherics, and you'll have some idea what to expect -- sort of like a posthumous collaboration between Howlin' Wolf and African Head Charge. The second Little Axe album features mostly McDonald originals, along with some well-chosen covers from the likes of Allen Toussaint, Skip James, and former Living Colour drummer Will Calhoun. But even his originals owe a deep debt to the work of his forefathers -- "If I Had My Way," for example, takes its whole chorus from the gospel classic "Samson and Delilah." Stone Cold Ohio is a real rarity: an album that can't be mistaken for anything other than blues, but that sounds nothing like any blues album you've ever heard. ~ Rick Anderson
2006 album on Peter Gabriel's Real World imprint by Little Axe AKA Skip McDonald (Sugarhill Gang/Tackhead). This is a return to his Blues roots featuring elements of Reggae, Gospel, Rock and Soul/Funk. Real World.Mojo (Publisher) (p.112) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[The songs] summon up swampy old blues cottonfield and chain-gang ghosts amid elaborate modern-time electronic ambiences." | | Larry Taylor Blues and Soul Ban They Were In This House CD (2004)
Stone Cold Ohio CD music
$14.29 If you're going to have a career in music, it's important to know what your strengths and weaknesses are. Being great at one thing doesn't automatically mean a person is great (or even competent) at another; the history of music is full of excellent guitarists, bassists, drummers, and horn players who turned out to be mediocre or lousy vocalists when -- for whatever reason -- they decided to take up singing. But Larry Taylor has no problem making the transition from ...

The statement may raise a few eyebrows, but this ex-Menudo hunk has come up a stunner of an album. A track like "Livin' La Vida Loca" makes a seamless amalgam of Pan-Americana in which surf guitars, electronica, and Mariachi horns rock together in fine form, and its Spanglish chorus feels as ordinary a pop hook as any other. Much of the album's appeal lies in the fact that it makes ...
| | Nina Simone Little Girl Blue CD (1957) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Stone Cold Ohio album
$9.49 Nina Simone's debut LP for the Bethlehem label, 1958's LITTLE GIRL BLUE, presents Simone's brooding sound and highly-focused eclecticism fully-formed from the very start. Even from the beginning, she stood to inherit Billie Holiday's mantle as the premiere jazz singer of the moment--a socially significant yet highly musical artist for the civil rights era just beginning to emerge. Whether by design or accident, Simone's classy juxtaposition of Bach, folk, and jazz standards--all '50s supper club staples to be sure--managed to pack a mighty prescient message for the heady days to come. Highlights include the original "My Baby Just Cares For Me" and a tender "I Loves You Porgy."
Little Girl Blue, released in 1957, was Nina Simone's first recording, originally issued on the Bethlehem label. Backed by bassist Jimmy Bond and Albert "Tootie" Heath, it showcases her ballad voice as one of mystery and sensuality, and showcases her up-tempo jazz style with authority and an enigmatic down-home feel that is nonetheless elegant. The album also introduced a fine jazz pianist. Simone was a solid improviser who never strayed far from the blues. Check the opener -- her reading of Duke Ellington's "Mood Indigo" -- which finger-pops and swings while keeping the phrasing deep-blue. It is contrasted immediately with one of the -- if not the -- definitive reads of Willard Robison's steamy leave-your-lover ballad "Don't Smoke in Bed." The title track, written by Rodgers & Hart, features "Good King Wenceslas" as a classical prelude to one of the most beautiful pop ballads ever written. It is followed immediately ...
