THREE MANTRAS captures Cabaret Voltaire in their early experimental-rock mode.
It would actually be more accurate to call this album 'Two Mantras,' given that it consists of two sidelong pieces, "Eastern Mantra" and "Western Mantra," which gives the still-then-a-trio a chance to expand its avant-electronic-grunge into trancier realms. Mallinder's abstract ranting is in full effect from the start of "Eastern," talking about bodies in the streets and the like, and from there things move into a rough realm of strange art, Voltaire-style. The combination of Kirk's guitar and Mallinder's bass work here is practically that of Krautrock/motorik, Mallinder playing a steady, quietly varying series of notes while Kirk throws in a variety of crumbling squalls. TRIBUTE TO FORGOTTEN STONES' PRODUCER With the current movie Shine A Light by the Rolling Stones under way, the unsung architect behind some of their greatest hits is being remembered by British producer/musician Uncle Ray. His album ËœIn Line With Mr Jimmy " is dedicated to U.S. record producer Jimmy Miller (1944-1994) the man responsible for the seminal albums: Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Exile On Main Street, Goat's Head Soup and Sticky Fingers. Uncle Ray, who worked with Miller, has re-styled versions of some of the Stones' classics. 'It's easy to forget the man behind some of their greatest albums. Jimmy is hardly mentioned any more' says Uncle Ray. 'I met him when he was brought over to London from New York by Island's Chris Blackwell to work with Steve Winwood. In the studio he was dynamite, always grabbing a shaker or cowbell and turning every session into Mardi Gras. And remember this was a time when most recording engineers still wore lab coats.
