| | Big Blues Box Volume 2 CD
Fuel 2000's Big Blues Box, Vol. 2 simply combines three single blues compilations that the label previously released in 2003, The Blues Came from Mississippi, The Blues Came from Texas, and Blues Guitar Heroes, into one set. There is no additional annotation (actually, the single-disc versions had no annotation, either), and aside from skewing the collection to the Mississippi and Texas end of things, no real blues identity is presented here. There are some great tracks mixed in, many of them true classics, like Charley Patton's "Screamin' and Hollerin' Blues," Tommy Johnson's deceptively jaunty "Canned Heat Blues," and Blind Lemon Jefferson's ancient "Black Snake Moan," as well as more modern fare like T-Bone Walker's elegant version of "Baby Please Don't Go" and a wonderfully loose jump blues turn by Ike Turner on "Matchbox," but too often the tracks included are inferior versions of the artist's song, as is the case with Son House here, whose rediscovery version of his "Death Letter" is hardly his best. There are countless blues anthologies on the market, and this one doesn't particularly distinguish itself, giving off the aura of being haphazardly thrown together in the hopes that it will stick to the wall. There's fine music in this set, to be sure, but it comes with a pretty generic approach all wrapped up in a pretty generic package. ~ Steve Leggett
Performers include: Lightnin' Hopkins, Johnny Winter, Albert Collins, James Cotton, Rufus Thomas, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Lowel Fulson, Memphis Slim, Ike Turner, Mississippi John Hurt, Sonny Boy Williamson, Mississippi Fred McDowell. Big Blues Box Volume 2 album
$11.65 Just in case the lyrics of the loopy strut that gives Chick Willis' umpteenth album its title are too subtle, the cover photo shows the ribald bluesman in a thematically appropriate pose with his guitar. And then, to drive the point home, the album ends with an even longer (and even dirtier) take on the same tune. No, Chick Willis has never been about good taste, bless him, and I Did It All is more of the same: old-school electric rhythm and blues with raunchy lyrics that are good-humored enough never to quite tip over into rank obscenity. As with all of Willis' albums, I Did It All is patchy, with a few songs like "I Love You Sweetheart" ...

Big Blues Box Volume 2 album
$15.19 Recorded in 1970. Includes liner notes by Pete Welding and Bonnie Raitt.
This reissue of the original Capitol landmark from 1969 adds ten tunes. The performance is classic and retains all of its spiky edginess. Even though blues purists griped because it was the first recording where the previously acoustic McDowell played electric guitar, his lines are so stark, spare, and jagged ...
