Actor Michael Pitt (LAST DAYS, BULLY, DAWSON'S CREEK) is the driving creative force behind the Brooklyn-based Pagoda. The band's debut self-titled album was released on Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace label in 2007. Sounding not unlike IN UTERO-era Nirvana, Pagoda is marked by Pitt's dark, twisted guitar hooks and pained vocals. While the band never reaches the furious, sublime heights of Nirvana, there's considerably more to this album than simply Hollywood angst bashed out on guitar. The cello is a nice musical touch, too.
Recording information: Arhara, Milan, Italy.
Personnel: Michael Pitt (vocals, guitar); Indigo Ruth Davis (cello); Ryan Donowho (drums).
Audio Mixers: Luca Amendolara; Hugh Pool.

Innovative, Insane and Inspiring It is disappointing to read reviews and articles that constantly compare Pagoda to 90's rock group Nirvana. It is an injustice and insult to the originality and creative capability of this band. This four-man rock band has a distinct sound all of its own that dwells somewhere between the garage-like, unpolished vocal style along with frequently fierce drumming, the more alternative, kaleidoscopic guitar riffs and the almost eastern influence of the uniquely-played cello. This is definately not just another grunge band. As a debut album, Pagoda does a solid job of showing the talent and scope of diversity that the band has to offer. An obvious highlight in the album is the hauntingly painful From Death to Birth that blends the two extremes of solemn abstraction and raging chaos as the song unfolds. Unfortunately, the Pagoda favourite Happy Song did not make the track listing. However all in all, the album provides an impressive start to their promising careers. $18.59 The double CD set JUST RELEASED...PLUS combines all the original tracks from 1970s rockers Crooks' album with 15 live cuts from a show at the Marquee Club.
The Crooks' Just Released originally appeared in England in 1980 on the Blueprint label, where its '60s-influenced mod revival sound made it into a cult favorite. The record, built almost entirely on originals by co-founder Tim Parry (aka "Jimmy Fingers"), still rocks with a lean, powerful sound strongly reminiscent of the Jam -- everything here is well played and fervently sung, but even with the occasional Chris Dean number interspersed, there's a certain sameness to the songs. The best song here is the muscular cover of the Steve Marriott/Ronnie Lane-authored "Understanding," and there's nothing quite as memorable as the single "Modern Boys," with its catchy hooks and chorus, or its B-side "Bangin' My Head," neither of which was on this LP. Among the four players, Parry and Dean make a great guitar duo, and Chris Broderick's bass work is astonishingly fluid and nimble, but Micky Sparrow's drumming is still the most impressive component of the band's sound a quarter-century later -- if this band was compared to the Who (and they were), it was his playing that helped cast that illusion. ~ Bruce Eder
Remastered reissue featuring the mod revivalist's 1980 album, Just Released with the addition of two bonus tracks, 'Modern Boys' & 'Bangin' My Head' & a second disc featuring 15 tracks of previously unreleased bonus material recorded live at The Marquee Club 1980. | | Alvin Lee In Tennessee CD (2004) (Import) Germany
Pagoda album
$18.39 Alvin Lee, the guitarist from Ten Years After joins forces with Elvis Presley's original guitarist, Scotty Moore, and drummer, D.J. Fontana, for IN TENNESSEE, a 2004 effort that recalls Chuck Berry and, of course, the King.
Although technically he never left, Alvin Lee is back. Recorded in 2003 at original Elvis guitarist Scotty Moore's Nashville home studio, with Moore as the mastermind behind the sessions (although due to ear problems he only plays on two tracks), along with Presley's drummer D.J. Fontana on the skins, this would be a listenable effort regardless of who was singing. With ex-Ten Years After's Alvin Lee playing guitar and taking the lead vocals it's a powerfully compelling disc that approximates many of the Sun label greats. Recorded predominantly live in the studio and sounding it, these songs -- mostly originals written expressly for the sessions and an unexpectedly rip-snorting run through of the TYA chestnut "I'm Going Home" -- find Lee at his most enthusiastic. He's clearly having a blast returning to his roots with some of the original architects of the sound backing him up, and that energy jumps out of the grooves. The songs aren't particularly memorable ("I'm Gonna Make It" is little more than a rewrite of "Great Balls of Fire," "How Do You Do It" sounds like any number of Chuck Berry tunes) but Lee is singing harder and riffing with more fire than he has in years. With blistering support from a band that can play this stuff in their sleep, Lee is in full flight. Of particular note is Pete Pritchard's rollicking double bass ...
