Supergirl review
$31.29 Director Michael Bay (ARMAGEDDON, THE ROCK) uses a tragic romantic triangle to set the stage for the infamous Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in this epic tale of love, loss, and patriotism. When Evelyn (Kate Beckinsale), a beautiful Navy nurse, meets dashing ace Army fighter pilot Rafe (Ben Affleck), the two fall madly in love, only to be separated abruptly when he is called upon to help fight the war in Europe. Unforeseen circumstances lead Evelyn into the arms of Danny (Josh Hartnett), another fighter pilot and Rafe's best friend since childhood. In the meantime, the Japanese military is planning the surprise early morning raid on Hawaii that will pull the United States into World War II. Spectacular special effects vividly recreate the attack in devastating detail as bombs explode, torpedoes shoot through the water, and bullets fly, shaking tranquil Pearl Harbor to its core. Bay deftly captures the patriotism and the loss of innocence of the young men and women who were suddenly thrust into the war. Cuba Gooding, Jr., Jon Voight, Alec Baldwin and Mako also star in this tribute to both the fallen and the survivors of one of the most horrific tragedies ever to occur on American soil.

$13.49 In WILD SEARCH, Chow Yun-Fat, the popular star of Ringo Lam's CITY ON FIRE and John Woo's HARD TARGET, reprises his familiar role as a lone wolf Hong Kong police detective. Here he plays Mew Mew, an emotionally fragile widow investigating arms smuggling. After her mother gets killed in a shoot-out with Japanese gangsters, a four-year-old girl named Ka Ka is the only witness who can identify the killer. Mew Mew takes her to the rural home of her aunt Cher (Cherie Chung). He arrives in a wounded state, and Cher mixes traditional Chinese medicines for him as he falls for her. The film is a change of pace for Lam. While there are the usual car chases and shoot-outs, WILD SEARCH is an attempt at a Hitchcock-style romance-thriller with believable characters who accidentally come in contact with criminals. Lam also wanted to contrast the lifestyle in the Chinese village with the hardness of urban Hong Kong. Although this isn't as extreme as in WITNESS, it nonetheless nicely captures the natural rhythms of rural life. But this idyll doesn't last long, and soon Mew Mew returns to the city to track down the gangsters who killed Ka Ka's mother.

$7.09 In director Bob Rafelson's MOUNTAINS OF THE MOON, Richard Francis Burton (Patrick Bergin) and John Hanning Speke (Iain Glen), two of history's most remarkable adventurers, set out to Africa in 1854 to find the mysterious source of the Nile River, their expedition supported by the Royal Geographic Society. Their quest is treacherous--the two men face intense hardship in the African wilderness and must confront native tribes that proceed to capture them and hold Burton hostage while torturing him. Back home in England, the treachery continues as Speke turns against Burton, and their friendship dissolves in acrimony. Based on the novel BURTON AND SPEKE by William Harrison, Rafelson's film is a remarkably lush production, largely shot on the actual locations where the events occurred.
