Worth having BUT ...it is performance dvd's like this one that make me glad I didn't spend the high price ticket costs to see this revue the last time I was in NY. More a stringing together of Sondheim songs with NO story line to speak of...this theatre piece is lacking something. The cast is wonderful yet no one really shines. Maybe it's being too familiar with the material or just the format but it just doesn't seem to work. I was most impressed with Ms. Burnett's voice...the pipes are still in great shape. All in all worth having...yet I doubt they'll be much repeat viewing. Submitted by a reviewer (Port Townsend,WA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
Sondheim + Henshall = BLISS Ok, I may be biased as I am a HUGE Ruthie Henshall fan, but this is just fantastic. I didn't know many sondheim songs when watching this, only "send in the clowns" etc, so this dvd was a bit of a revelation.
Bronson Pinchot: Unknown to me before this. Apparently unknown as a singer, better known as a comic actor. Very appealing and funny. Best song: Everbody ought to have a maid
George Hearn: Again unknown to me. Clearly a fine singer. Well deserved tony nomination. Best song: The road you didn't take
Carol Burnett: I'm afraid to say that I also didn't know who she was either. Vocals are unsteady in places, but very funny. I just wish that occasionally she wouldn't be quite SO obvious with her comedy eg. Back In Business. As she found out in the blooper (hilarious) she can get laughs without trying! Best song: Not getting Married (great diction)
John Barrowman: Ah, someone I know of! Best I've heard him perform. Proves himself as a great performer. Best Song: Marry Me A Little
Ruthie Henshall: Steals the show. She is the best performer I have ever known, and her performance here doesn't dissapoint. Her voices is pure and beautiful in "Unworthy of you Love", deep and sexy in "Sooner or Later", and powerful and gritty in "More". She also provides beautiful accompaniement in "Every Day A Little Death" and "Not Getting Married". My Idol! Also proves herself a great dancer ("More" "Bang!") and comic actress ("Lovely"). Enough said. Best song: All Of Them!
I know this piece is criticised for a lack of storyline, but it is an, although subtle, moving portrait of relationships. A jolly good show to watch time and again!

Carol Channing had her greatest Broadway role (to date) in this hit Broadway show, and her scatty style and unmistakable squeaky voice came over perfectly on this album. The many highlights from Jerry Herman's stunning score included the tender 'It Only Takes A Moment' and 'Put On Your Sunday Clothes', but it was the title ...
| | Karen Akers If We Only Have Love CD (2004)
Stephen Sondheim's Putting It Together film
$14.75 As the album's title, drawn from a song used in Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris, suggests, Broadway and nightclub singer Karen Akers explores the impact of love in her fifth album for DRG Records, which, as usual, consists of show tunes. "Patterns," written by David Shire and Richard Maltby, Jr. for their musical Baby but not introduced until their anthology revue Closer Than Ever, serves as an introduction to the subject. "A Sleepin' Bee," Harold Arlen and Truman Capote's ...
| | Finian's Rainbow CD (2004)
Stephen Sondheim's Putting It Together review
$15.65 Founded in 1988, the Irish Repertory Theatre of New York is an off-Broadway theater company that generally spends its time reviving the works of Irish playwrights like Sean O'Casey and Brendan Behan, though it also extends its charter to cover writers of Irish lineage, such as Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, and Eugene O'Neill. Still, doing Finian's Rainbow is a stretch, as it was written by E.Y. "Yip" Harburg, nobody's idea of an Irishman, and it is a musical to boot (the music is by Burton Lane). Nevertheless, the plot does concern two expatriate ...

Stephen Sondheim's Putting It Together DVD
$11.69 Columbia Records president and producer Goddard Lieberson, who, in addition to bringing many original Broadway cast albums to Columbia from the mid-'40s on also made a point of recording studio cast albums of vintage Broadway musicals that had never been recorded before or had been recorded by other companies, had good reasons to put together his own version of Brigadoon ten years after its Broadway premiere. The show had been recorded by rival RCA Victor Records shortly before the advent of the LP era on five 78s, so the original Broadway cast album contained only ten tracks and ran less ...

Stephen Sondheim's Putting It Together movie DVD
$15.65 Silliness abounds on the Broadway cast recording of MONTY PYTHON'S SPAMALOT, a loose adaptation of the revered (and much-quoted) film MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL. Penned by Python member Eric Idle (along with his musical collaborator John Du Prez), SPAMALOT follows the absurd adventures of King Arthur (Tim Curry) and his Knights of the Round Table, including Sir Robin (David Hyde Pierce) and Sir Lancelot (Hank Azaria). ...
