Dutchess album
$8.99 San Francisco-based outfit Train have garnered a rabidly devoted following with their easy, freewheeling sound, which combines catchy hooks with the muscle of classic FM and the polish of contemporary mainstream rock. Train's 2004 live album helped summarize the band's career to that point by showcasing their instrumental chops, their confidence as performers, and the scores of crowd-pleasing tunes from albums like DROPS OF JUPITER and MY PRIVATE NATION.
2006's FOR ME, IT'S YOU will not disappoint Train's fans. In fact, the group's sunny, singalong melodies ...
| | Keane Under The Iron Sea CD (2006)
Dutchess CD music
$12.09 Having won both critical and commercial acclaim for their debut album, HOPES AND FEARS, British band Keane pushes the hook-infested keyboard-rock on their sophomore effort in a darker, moodier direction. But UNDER THE IRON SEA features an intense, romantic brand of melancholy, with the trio of Tom Chaplin, Richard Hughes, and Tim Rice-Oxley vamping their way through vaulting rock melodies and power ballads, all without the aid of a single guitar.
There are plenty of deliciously chewy guitar-like sounds, though, that Keane achieves by feeding electric pianos and synthesizers through various effects ...
| | Nelly Furtado Loose CD (2006)
Dutchess music CDs
$10.39 On her third studio album, LOOSE, Nelly Furtado largely abandons the bohemian vibe of previous outings, opting for an energetic, club-ready sound said to be influenced by the time she spent recording in Miami. The Canadian-born singer-songwriter approaches this significant change with wild abandon, as revealed ...
| | Beyonce B'Day CD (2006) Bonus Tracks
Dutchess songs
$9.55 Beyonce had little to prove on her second solo outing, B'DAY, having already demonstrated her taste, (solo) vocal prowess, and sparkling star quality on her first post-Destiny's Child release in 2003. Nevertheless, the singer and her crack team of producers and collaborators (R&B's finest, including the Neptunes, Swizz Beats, and Rich Harrison) have come up with a collection that's at least equal to her previous triumphs, and that shows off an almost angry intensity only hinted at on earlier releases.
The club hit "Deja Vu," with an extended rap from boyfriend/producer Jay-Z, boasts an addictive bass line that contrasts dramatically with Beyonce's emotive upper register. The haunting "Ring the Alarm" is a multilayered melodrama built around a dizzying minor-key ...
| | Scissor Sisters Ta-Dah CD (2006)
Dutchess album
$12.59 The Scissor Sisters' self-titled 2004 debut proved the band to be postmodern recombinant wizards of the first order, mixing the hookiest elements of pop history with tongues planted firmly in cheeks. The group's sophomore effort, TA-DAH, builds on many of those same references, including flashy glitter-ball disco, accessible 1970s AM pop, glam rock, and almost any artist who has crafted dramatic, danceable jams with a knowing wink.
When not mining familiar vibes from the Bee Gees ("I Don't Feel Like Dancin'") and Elton John ("She's My Man"), the Scissor Sisters reference Blondie ("Kiss You Off"), Paul McCartney (the music hall-esque "I Can't Decide"), and Stevie Wonder (on the funky tune titled, ironically, "Paul McCartney"), among others. But it's the way the Sisters throw these elements together that lifts them above jokiness and ...
| | Daughtry CD (2006)
Dutchess CD music
$9.29 As one of the finalists on the fifth season of the AMERICAN IDOL reality-TV show, North Carolina-based neo-grunge vocalist Chris Daughtry garnered even more attention by getting asked to be the frontman for the group Fuel, and then, surprisingly, declining the offer. This 2006 album, technically credited to the band Daughtry, reveals what the singer opted for instead, offering up impressively catchy, yet requisitely brooding, heavy rock, ...
| | Hayes Carll Little Rock CDs (2005)
Dutchess music CDs
$11.69 Little Rock is only Hayes Carll's second album, but already he sounds like a veteran singer/songwriter. His tales of drifters and searchers, full of sharp observations and biting wit, invite comparisons to Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, and Robert Earl Keen, while his talent has brought collaborations with Ray Wylie Hubbard and Guy Clark. For a Texas singer/songwriter, those are big shoes to fill, but the Houston native fills them admirably. Carll has said, with tongue undoubtedly in cheek, that he chose to write about Little Rock because there are already so many songs written about Texas, but the terrific title track ably demonstrates that he has no need for a songwriter inferiority complex. The rip-roaring tune, featuring ace sessionman Kenny Vaughn's down-and-dirty guitar work, has Carll crisscrossing America searching for happiness before deciding to return to Little Rock. His up-tempo, rockier numbers -- like the aforementioned "Little Rock," the colorful front-porch rap "Down the Road Tonight" (that name-checks everyone from the Dali Llama to Michael Jackson), and the rollicking life-of-a-musician tune "Sit in With the Band" -- jump off the disc and immediately grab the listener's attention. But Carll is just as impressive on his quieter, more introspective tunes. "Long Way Home" is a touching ode to a departed friend, while the ...
