Sinatra's years on the Capitol label (1953-60) were great years. His voice had matured into a powerful and poignant instrument; his sense of swing was infallible; and he was blessed with an innovative and sophisticated arranger, Nelson Riddle, whose charts fit Sinatra like a beautiful suit.
This one-disc compilation of 20 songs includes many classics: "I've Got You Under My Skin," "You Make Me Feel So Young," "The Lady Is a Tramp," In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning," and "One For My Baby (And One More For the Road)." The packaging is attractive (with some great photos of Sinatra) and the digital re-mastering was done right.
Also included are updated versions of songs Sinatra sang in his earlier years ("Oh! Look At Me Now," and "Night and Day"). While this CD is not all-inclusive--some of the more melancholy songs of these years are omitted--it's a collection that can be listened to again and again.
Recorded between 1953 and 1960. Includes liner notes by Bruce Springsteen and Pete Hamill.

The title of Will Downing's 2009 effort, CLASSIQUE, produced by the artist and Rex Rideout, may be a bit misleading: it is not a compilation but a brand-spanking new collection of contemporary jazz-inflected R&B--in other words, classic Downing. The album's first single, "Something Special"--with its hand drums, loops, and slippery flute flitting around a well-placed, subtle horn section--is at its core a popping midtempo love song. Elsewhere, his cover of Barry White's "I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little Bit More Baby" reveals just how deep the master's influence is on Downing. He may not have the full depth of White's baritone, but he gets close, and his expressiveness and emotional connection to the song make it shine. The completely old-school Marvin Gaye ballad "Baby I'm for Real" features a duet appearance by Phil Perry. It's convincing and utterly gorgeous. But not only do the covers work here; Downing's originals connect too--and not just the aforementioned single, but "Love Suggestions," "Ride," and "Let's Make It Now" also reveal the depth and breadth of Downing's songwriting. Although they started releasing records in 1965, this was the Ides of March's first album, issued in the wake of their huge hit, "Vehicle." As could be expected, much of the material on Vehicle the album was in the same sub-Blood, Sweat & Tears vein as "Vehicle" itself, though lacking in the monstrous hooks that made "Vehicle" a number two hit. The LP did, however, allow for some variation from the horn-soul-rock format, and even some of the horn rock reflected more of a Midwestern pop/rock base than BS&T ever did. There was, for instance, the orchestrated smooth harmony pop/rock of "One Woman Man" (their debut single), the MOR Righteous Brothers feel of "Home," and the quasi-progressive extended arrangements of "Wooden Ships" and "Eleanor Rigby." Less impressively, "Factory Band" is an obvious imitation of Creedence Clearwater Revival.
