Jacki Cooper is an exciting Sydney-raised performer who has been living and working in Adelaide since 1989 but recently relocated back to Sydney. She earned a Bachelor of Music in Jazz voice in 1993 at Adelaide's prestigious Elder Conservatorium under the guidance of Michelle Nicolle. Before forming her own quartet, Jacki recorded and performed regularly with legendary trad jazz composer, Dave Dallwitz, enabling her to also work with jazz greats, GraemeBell and Ade Monsborough. In 1994, Jacki was invited to teach jazz voice for the world-renowned Stanford JazzWorkshop at Stanford University in California. During this time, she gigged regularly with local San Francisco musicians, recorded a radio program on Fog in the City Radio with the Harvey Wainapel Quintet, and sang with the Jim Cullum Jazz Band at the famous Landing Jazz Club on the Riverwalk in San Antonio, Texas. While in the USA, Jackistudied voice with a bevy of renowned jazz singers including Mark Murphy and Betty Carter, and also took instruction from musicians Mulgrew Miller, John Clayton andLewis Nash. Jacki is a regular performer on the Adelaide and Sydney jazz circuit and in festivals and eventsaround the country. In 2003, she cruised around Europe as a featured artist on the Oceania Regatta Luxury Liner,performing with an 8 piece show band. More recently, Jacki has been invited to perform with John Morrison's Trio in Sydney, and headlined at the famous jazz club, Soup Plus. In April 2005, she was invited to perform at Sax n Art jazz club in Saigon, Vietnam. Electric Doormat began as a one-man band, one which was composed of one man (Ben Spees). Over the years a number of additional contributors have entered the fold. First setting out to become a folk-rock guitarist, Ben discovered that nobody plays folk-rock anymore. Picking up an accordion, he then set off to devise an entirely new form of rock music, influenced by his twin heroes, XTC and They Might Be Giants, along with an assortment of other deviant ideas.The Go-Karts Of Ft. Wayne was released in July 2004 to cult acclaim, and those "in-the-know" now consider Electric Doormat a major "rising star" in the burgeoning "indie" "music" "scene". Go-Karts contains many Doormat classics including 12:34, Camera Obscura, Odd Time, and more. These are intricate home studio compositions burnished to gleaming mid-fi pop nuggets. Electronic yet rocking, edgy yet melodic. Also be sure to check out the 2006 Electric Doormat release, EVIL GENIUS, which takes the prototypical Doormat sound to strange and shocking new musical frontiers with the assistance of numerous celebrity guests. *** The following is a review of "The Go-Karts of Ft. Wayne" by Brandon Isleib of Earth Dyed Red ***First, I'll admit my bias - I've guested on this guy's albums (it's only one guy doing the whole album) and have been friends with him for years. That said, this batch of songs is incredible. "12:34" is an enigmatic burbling masterpiece, with rolling percussion, a punk energy, and a bridge lifted out of...prog-rock?!? While a couple of the songs are weak links (I don't care for the title track...the lyrics just aren't as clever as they were intended to be), the others are fantastic. "Wax Museum" is a typical Electric Doormat song - a combination of synth accentuation and electric guitars on a bizarre but fascinating story about visiting - a wax museum. "Undetectably Yours," an old favorite, is about the sadness of a stalker who has some second thoughts - by the end, the acoustic guitars make you feel actual sympathy for the stalker.
