Throwing Muses' sophomore album HOUSE TORNADO builds on and focuses the wild, mercurial energy of their exceptional debut. Though the band's a bit more streamlined here, the music--given Kristen Hersh's unpredictable songs and part-angel/part-devil voice--still sounds like nothing else before or since. Jagged, shimmering, paranoid, and possessed of a hallucinatory beauty, Hersh's songs have a sorcerer's effect; listening to them feels like being wrapped in gauze, scratched with glass, and dropped into a particle accelerator all at once.

Though the band's sound would become heavier and more rock-oriented on later albums, on HOUSE TORNADO they still favor a clean, shimmering guitar sound that contrasts deliciously with thundering drums and Tanya Donelly's burbling bass. "Juno" almost sounds like a pop song, but the dreamy intensity of "Colder" and "Marriage Tree," or the surreal piano ballad "Walking In The Dark" attest to the Muses' defiantly individual standing. All told, this is an indie classic from one of the best and most underappreciated rock bands of the 1980s.

Recorded at Fort Apache Studios, North Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Throwing Muses: Kristin Hersh (vocals, guitar, piano); Tanya Donelly (vocals, guitar, percussion); Leslie Langston (bass, percussion, background vocals); David Nacizo (drums, percussion, background vocals).

Additional personnel: Rich Gilbert (slide guitar).

5 stars Liam Stuart rates Throwing Muses
My buddy Liam, a north Cork City native with an extensive knowledge of 80's 90's and 00's American music, rates the Throwing Muses as one of the Best of Indie bands of the period. This he feels is a reasonable assertion based on the subsequent successes of the former Throwing Muses band members.

Digitally remastered from the original master tapes, this is a reissue of the hit English prog/ classic rock group's 1979 album featuring the smash 'You Angel You', plus the original cover art and two bonus tracks, single versions of 'Don't Kill It Carol' & 'You Angel You'. 11 tracks total. 1999 release. Vocalist Chris Thompson's last album with Manfred Mann's Earth Band is dressed up in Mann's beautiful keyboards. Angel Station has some key moments -- "You Angel You," a Bob Dylan tune that sounds nothing like Dylan, and not the way their Top Ten version of "Quinn the Eskimo"/"The Mighty Quinn" was reinvented. "You Angel You" has a strong hook with topnotch Anthony Moore production work, and it melts into the title track of Harriet Schock's landmark Hollywood Town album, the source of Helen Reddy's "Ain't No Way to Treat a Lady." The Manfred Mann version is interesting, and explores the possibilities of the composition, though Schock's version is perfect country-pop and hard to top. It is nice to see a rock band with such good taste. "Angelz at My Gate," co-written by Manfred Mann, leads off side two and is another dreamy "angel" tune. It sounds mysteriously like "Games Without Frontiers," the Peter Gabriel radio hit from his 1980 third self-titled solo album. Now since this was released the ...

Beatles Let It Be... Naked CDs  (1970) Bonus CD

CD $15.15  4.1 stars Top 500
LET IT BE...NAKED contains a FLY ON THE WALL bonus disc including song rehearsals and conversation snatches. Includes liner notes by Kevin Howlett and interview excerpts with The Beatles In its original form, LET IT BE signaled the end of an era, closing the book on the Beatles, as well as literally and figuratively marking the end of the '60s. The 1970 release evolved from friction-filled sessions the Beatles intended to be an organic, bare-bones return to their roots. Instead, the endless hours of tapes were eventually handed over to Phil Spector, since neither the quickly splintering Beatles nor their longtime producer George Martin wanted to sift through the voluminous results. LET IT BE... NAKED sets the record straight, revisiting the contentious sessions, stripping away the Spectorian orchestrations, reworking the running order, and losing all extemporaneous in-studio banter. On this version of the album, filler tracks ("Dig It," "Maggie Mae") are dropped, while juicy b-side "Don't Let Me Down" is added. The most obvious revamping is on the songs handled heavily by Spector. Removing the orchestrations from "The Long and Winding Road" and "Across the Universe" gives Paul McCartney's vocals considerably more resonance on the former, doing the same for John Lennon's voice and guitar on the latter. This alternate take on LET IT BE enhances the album's power, reclaiming the raw, unadorned quality that was meant to be its calling card from the beginning. Generally regarded ...

Steel Train Twilight Tales From The Prairies Of The Sun CD  (2005) Enhanced CD

Steel Train are a very close cousin to Canadian roots group Blue Rodeo circa Five Days in July, judging by the happy, ambling "Better Love," which centers around lead singer Jack Antonoff and his infatuation with actress Scarlett Johansen. Folksy and very warm, the song just gels from the onset and chugs along at a jug band's pace. From there the band goes down a dusty country lane on the catchy and laid-back "Road Song," which sounds like Golden Smog or an early version of the Grateful Dead with mandolin work from longtime Dead associate David Grisman. Just as stellar is the soft, acoustic backbone fueling "Dig," which could be an homage to Brian Wilson or the Beach Boys with that cozy, sitting-around-the-campfire harmony. Gene Parsons, known for his work in the Flying Burrito Brothers, lends a hand on pedal steel guitar. ...

The Vital Few - Boole\'s Third Full-Length Album===============================================(Synopsis From Sonic Mainline)It\'s been five years since electronic anarchists Boole released their acclaimed \"Pheromones,\" but the D.C. based troublemakers are back with excellent follow-up, \"The Vital Few.\" As a quick (very quick, in fact) description for the uninitiated, know only this: Boole defy, plain and simple, mixing diverse styles such as psytrance and R&B, breaks and good ol\' fashion industrial into their patented no-holds-barred musical melting pot. Since Pheromones, they\'ve played shows with top-notch bands like Covenant, Iris, and And One, created the scene phenomenon Noonerschaft, and did epic remixes for bands like Stromkern (and we\'re not using the term \"epic\" lightly here), so they\'ve been busy. The Vital Few is well worth the wait.We could be humble, but screw that-- Boole is the answer to the whiny masses that claim \"There\'s nothing interesting in ebm/industrial anymore.\" They\'re that cool/weird kid in high school that sat alone in art class that everyone wanted to know. They\'re that band that all the cool bands like.So welcome to Boole, and welcome to The Vital Few. We could try and explain it further, but it\'s easier to say this: \"Scene\" purists will most likely not enjoy this. However, people who enjoy creative music that alternates between heartfelt sincerity and sonic insanity will. In other words, people with taste (or lack thereof) who don\'t want their music spoon-fed yet still want to shake their ass on the dancefloor. It ain\'t hard to listen to, but it also doesn\'t pander. ...
