Generally considered to be one of Einsturzende Neubauten's most accessible albums, 1985's HALBER MENSCH finds the German industrial ensemble tempering its sonic assault with the occasional nod to melodies and conventional song structures. Although it seemed as though founding member Blixa Bargeld's dual loyalties to Neubauten and Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds might result in diminished returns for the former band, the situation arguably enhanced the Berlin-based group's sound, with a greater attention to mood tempering the act's penchant for noise.
The ominous, pounding, and vaguely danceable "Yu-Gung (Futter Mein Ego)" points to where Ministry would head in the following years, while the clanging "Seele Brennt" is broken up by moments of near-silence, and the eerie (and unexpected) take on Lee Hazlewood's "Sand" nods to '50s/'60s rock & roll, revealing Neubauten's newfound aesthetic balance. For those unfamiliar with Einsturzende Neubauten, this is the best point of departure, and it remains a landmark industrial record.

Their brilliance lies in their ability to provoke a thoroughly intelligent reaction from the listener as opposed to an irrational outburst. Although two exceptional EPs came out between The Troubled Sleep of Piano Magic and Disaffected, an entire year passed -- for the first time since Piano Magic's inception -- without an album-length release. (Piano Magic say this is their sixth proper album, meaning they're probably not counting the Son de Mar score and the two-song A Trick of the Sea.) Glen Johnson's group returns as inspired as ever, turning in a work that matches and occasionally exceeds Low Birth Weight and Artists' Rifles. Some of their other albums have suffered from mild to acute stray-idea syndrome, but they've found a way here to bundle up a number of disparate approaches while keeping it all focused and linear. They have been described as “wonderfully witty” and “frickin’ funny,” and are often compared to The Smothers Brothers (quite a compliment). StanStan Hatch is a Yankee by birth and a Texan by choice. He was born in New York state, grew up in Michigan, lived in Illinois for many years, and moved to Texas in 2001. Stan first learned to play guitar in his teens when his older brother let him borrow one. In the early ‘90’s, he bought a guitar from his barber and started playing again. Stan found that playing an old acoustic guitar was a perfect remedy for high-tech job stress. But he had no inclination to perform outside his home.After Stan moved to Houston, he started playing guitar for fun with his great friend and acoustic partner Paul McCann.
