Australian rapper MACROMANTICS will have arms and eyebrows raised with the release of her debut album, 'Moments in Movement'. Macromantics is ROMY HOFFMAN, a Melbourne based artist who began her music career in the mid 90's as a 15 year-old guitarist for BEN LEE's first band, NOISE ADDICT. She first discovered Hip Hop on a US tour with the band, returned to Australia, picked up a microphone and started rapping.

Out of a seemingly endless array of hip hop albums, every now and again something fresh and powerful rises to the top of the pile. Hailing from the Queensbridge Housing Projects in Long Island City (home to Marley Marl among others), 20-year old Nasir "Nas" Jones is less concerned with being an impersonator than with being an originator, bypassing adolescent fantasies and B-boy braggadocio in favor of jazzy beats, rap noir realism and new answers to urban despair. ILLMATIC is his story, a cautionary tale of the inner-city streets, and as Nas makes plain on his opener, "The Genesis," this is what he does, with or without a record contract, and it's going to be served up straight, no chaser. And because Nas has the courage to transcend popular trends, to separate himself from the ranks of wannabes and me-toos, he may be on the verge of inaugurating some stylistic changes of his own. Production-wise, Nas has gathered together some of the superstars of the hip hop underground, producers the likes of Q-Tip, Pete Rock, L.E.S., DJ Premier and The Large Professor, but it is Nas's unique rhythmic cadences, his idiomatic sense of on-the-street wordplay, his disrespect for the high time and the empty rhyme that distinguishes ILLMATIC. When Nas rocks the mic, it's not a hedonist's wet dream, but a ...

A half-decade after breaking through to the mass public as a cagey veteran with the smash "Slow Jams," the "world's fastest rapper" continues to consistently drop some of the most downright interesting records in the hip-hop universe. 2009's CATEGORY F5 is quite possibly Twista's tightest record to date. The album is both a whirlwind of language and a bloodletting, a reminder that the rapid-fire rapper possesses one of the most ...
Double Negative
Muffins Double Negative CD  (2004)

Moments In Movement CD music
CD $15.59  5 stars Audio Samples
Based on the evidence presented in Bandwidth, the Muffins' 2002 reunion CD (and their first recording in 20 years), the group chose to define itself as a competent, professional jazz/prog rock quartet featuring the saxes of bandmembers Tom Scott and Dave Newhouse, with rhythmic support from Billy Swann on bass and Paul Sears on drums. The original compositions were pleasantly melodic, with modest improvisational elements and occasional tentative avant-garde gestures (e.g., riff-based skronking from one or both of the saxes). In short, a good thing of its kind, but nothing to inspire irrational devotion. Having released Bandwidth, the group members might have faded back into their pre-reunion routines or hung out together to generate a few more decent status quo recordings. But instead, they upped the ante, and this new CD is fresh and genuinely exciting, with great writing by both Scott and Newhouse, more textural variety in the arrangements, and more conviction, swagger, and even passion in the playing. Perhaps the group members needed to get past the nostalgia factor and the sheer novelty of being together again before they were able to flex their creative muscle and move ahead. Invited guests on this new recording include two members of the Sun Ra Arkestra, veteran alto saxman Marshall Allen and baritone player Knoel Scott, and while Allen and Scott are far from dominant (they only appear on three pieces), the ability of the music to accommodate their wild and woolly energy says volumes about the easy confidence and vision of the working quartet. The 17 selections in the generous program include far too many highlights to mention, with a range of expression that moves back and forth between relatively straight-ahead jazz, jazz fusion, funk, moody and dissonant impressionism, and a handful of anthemic prog rock declarations. An additional trombone on a number of pieces, a string section of violin, viola, and cellos (featured on "They Come on Unknown Nights"), some tasteful ...

Shorebirds Heavy Hands Of Hunters CD  (2008) (Import)

The Shorebirds making a second album? You would think that after their big record deal gone bad would push them into a point of quitting or becoming shepherds. But look at them now. Mark Ephraim got a girl his own age, reportedly quit the bad stuff, and now he's writing songs that recall the ever so joyous benefits of partying over and over again until the novacaine of boredom sets in. The Shorebirds still carry heavy, beefy, cranked up sound in the opening track "Camera Lens", self produced as usual by Mark Ephraim, who is known for producing countless gems for other Brooklyn heroes including Dirty on Purpose, J.A.C.K., and Turner Cody to name a few... Whatever, this record sounds as bold as love in a handbag with it's well crafted guitar interplay and psych backup vocals that make the country style track "Background Laughter" sound like Brian Eno writing a song in prison with Johnny Cash as his cell mate. The Heavy Hands of Hunters is different; it's dirty, edgy, and takes the protools out of the picture with unedited first take sounding guitar riffs and some vocal lines that sound like Mark Ephraim recorded them whilst waiting for the kettle to whistle. Guitarists Dan Weber and Mark get to show off, while bassist Sara Press provides the momentum that makes the Shorebirds an evil groove band. They've never kicked harder than "Shiver" which turns the old Dick Dale riff into a surf-metal anthem hook, or "Alligator" which jumps like Iggy Pop in "Lust for Life." The music is full of half stories that leave a bit to the ...
