NOFX are masters of the punk ethic of self-deprecation, and it begs the question if they truly realize the mark they have made on the history of modern hardcore. After 18 years, the band that sums up its musical prowess humbly as "good," releases a staggering collection of B-sides, compilation tracks, and rare cuts (many of which were ...

| | 10cc Sheet Music CD (1974) (Import) Germany
In The Acts Of Violence music CDs
$17.89 1974's SHEET MUSIC was 10cc's second album, featuring the single "The Wall Street Shuffle" among 11 other tongue-in-cheek 1970s pop gems.
10cc's second album was the next phase in what guitarist Eric Stewart called the band's "masterplan to control the universe. The Sweet, Slade, and Gary Glitter are all very valuable pop," he proclaimed, "but it's fragile because it's so dependent on a vogue. We don't try to appeal to one audience, or aspire to instant stardom, we're satisfied to move ahead a little at a time as long as we're always moving forward." Sheet Music, perhaps the most widely adventurous album of what would become a wildly adventurous year, would more than justify that claim. "It grips the heart of rock'n'roll like nothing I've heard before," raved Melody Maker, before describing 10cc as "the Beach Boys of "Good Vibrations," the Beatles of "Penny Lane," they're the mischievous kid next door, they're the Marx Brothers, they're Jack and Jill, they're comic cuts characters, and they're sheer brilliance." Stewart certainly agreed ...
| | Plateau Spacecake CD (1999)
In The Acts Of Violence songs
$12.99 Since the demise of Skinny Puppy, Cevin Key has been involved in a number of interesting side projects and associations (including Download). But it is as Plateau that Key, joined by partner Philth, has recorded some of the finest electronica of his career. Plateau travels far beyond the boundaries of industrial music, reaping the rewards of such electronica mavens as Autechre, B12, and Richard Kirk along the way, ...
| | Kim Waters Someone To Love You CD (2002)
In The Acts Of Violence album
$14.45 Shanachie makes a mighty bold assertion on the CD insert that Kim Waters is the creator of "the sexiest sound in smooth urban jazz." Hype? Not if the saxman lives up beautifully to the billing, and his sound is pretty darn sexy and romantic on the coolest of these ballads. He made his mark on the genre with a supremely gentle soprano sound, and tracks like "You Know That I Love You" (featuring those all-important radio-ready female backing vocals) and "Heaven Sent" blend this dreamy seduction ability with the slickest in modern-meets-retro-soul grooves and ambience. The similarly likeable "Someone to Love You" informs listeners that the sexiness translates perfectly to the alto sax experience. All of that is quite expected from Waters, who never disappoints, but the real fun of this disc is the way Waters is loosening up and extending that love to the dancefloor. "Waterfall" thumps and grinds like an atmospheric disco hit, Waters' alto textures jumping happily over the type of moody rhythmic foundation Joyce Cooling finds so inviting. "The Ride" is a little gentler, falling in between the bedroom eyes and the last dance of the night. The final track, billed ...
| | Dusty Springfield For Cafe Apres-Midi CD (2003) (Import) Japan
In The Acts Of Violence CD music
$35.29 This Japanese compilation collects 29 tracks from the sultry blue-eyed soul British invader who gave the world "Spooky," "Son of a Preacher Man," "(They Long to Be) Close to You," "Look of Love," "Sunny," and "This Girl's in Love with You," all of which appear here. All of the tracks have been drawn from Springfield's 1964 to 1973 heyday, so there's little in the way of filler, and For Café Aprčs-Midi further ups the ante with a handful ...
| | Phantom Limbs Displacement CD (2003)
In The Acts Of Violence music CDs
$9.05 Oakland's Phantom Limbs have returned with Displacement, the finest example yet of the quintet's blasphemous organ punk. Suggesting the Murder City Devils if they had listened to parlor music backwards or collaborated with famous Bay Area Satanist/organist Anton LaVey, the Phantom Limbs are as adept at scaring listeners as they are at rocking them. Stevenson Sedgwick's frantic church organ sound twists seductively around the spine of each song (the trunk of each apple tree?), as perpetually tortured vocalist Loto Ball screeches couplets like "I hate the wounded man/Who staggers/Into my arms/Convulsing and puking." Squalls of guitar and a teetering-in-time rhythm section provide fast-burning fuel for this freaky funeral procession, which ...
