Essentially a companion piece to THE LONG SALT, 2006's FOLLOW THIS HOUSE finds the Brooklyn-based noise-rock act Mouthus unleashing another blunt-force, guitar-heavy barrage. While the rumbling, stripped-down release (see the appropriately titled "Quake On") is unlikely to garner the band any new followers, it will readily appeal to the group's cadre of devoted fans. Four tracks and (gratefully) only about half an hour long, the latest effort from these avant noise construction workers was recorded during a heat wave and sounds like it. This is music that melts -- not softly and pleasantly like ice cream or gracefully like snow, but with sludgy, viscous resentment. Imagine an angry interstate highway softening in the humid furnace of a Texas summer day, and imagine what it would sound like if it could sing: that's the sound of Mouthus on Follow This House. Is it good? Hard to say. It's got some complexity, and you could probably call it interesting, but the experience of listening to it isn't really musical -- it's more queasily anthropological. It's mood music for a particularly bad mood. Proceed with that particular brand of caution that one might normally reserve for albums by Merzbow featuring pictures of dismembered people on the cover. ~ Rick AndersonThe Wire (p.60) - "This is music that has suspended its own consciousness....You have to put it on, tweak your ears slightly out of focus and drift off with it." Follow This House
$14.09 Dave Holland Quartet: Dave Holland (bass); Anthony Braxton, Sam Rivers (flute, reeds); Barry Altschul (marimba, percussion). Recorded at Allegro Studio, New York, New York on November 30, 1972. Includes liner notes by Dave Holland. Composer: Dave Holland . Personnel: Anthony Braxton (flute, clarinet, reeds, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone); Sam Rivers (flute, reeds, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Barry Altschul (marimba, drums, percussion). Audio Mixers: Kurt Rapp; Martin Wieland. Recording information: Allegro Studio, New York, NY (11/30/1972). Dave Holland's debut as a leader, Conference of the Birds, doesn't seem to get its proper due outside of avant-garde circles; perhaps, when discussing the greats, Holland's name simply doesn't spring to mind as immediately. Whatever the case, Conference of the Birds is one of the all-time avant-garde jazz classics, incorporating a wide spectrum of '60s innovations. Part of the reason it works so well is the one-time-only team-up of two avant-garde legends: the fiery, passionate Sam Rivers and the cerebral ...

Audio Mixer: Bob Daspit. Recording information: Red Rocker Recording Studio. Photographer: William Blochinger. After 11 years fronting Van Halen, Sammy Hagar slipped easily back into the solo mode he'd pursued prior to joining the hard rock behemoth, and 2006's LIVIN' IT UP, recorded with his band the Waboritas, proves Hagar is plenty comfortable on his own turf. The album sports the hard-partying, hard-rocking vibe Hagar is known ...

| | Terrence Brewer Quintessential CD (2007)
Follow This House
$13.15 San Francisco Bay area jazz guitarist Terrence Brewer, is back with a new album, a new band, and a fresh sound! QuintEssential, produced by Strong Brew Music and recorded at the world famous Fantasy Studios, is the highly anticipated follow up to Brewer’s debut records, The Calling: Volume One and Volume Two (April 2006). QuintEssential returns Ben Stolorow (piano), Ravi Abcarian (acoustic bass), and Micah McClain (drums) from The Calling: Volume One and adds, Berkelee School of music alum and Bay area resident, Kasey Knudsen on saxophones. Ranging from hard driving swing to soulful backbeat grooves to infectious Afro-Cuban textures, QuintEssential features nine of Brewer’s original compositions. As one of the last recordings at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA before the studio closed its doors in September 2007, QuintEssential is a rare treasure. Chief Engineer Stephen Hart, most notably known in the jazz world for recording McCoy Tyner, Joe Pass, Flora and Airto, Oscar Peterson, and Branford Marsalis just to name a few recorded, mixed, and mastered the project.“Brewer has a natural, inviting sound that instantly transports you back to the heyday of classic jazz guitar…” writes David Rubien (San Francisco Chronicle feature, March 20, 2007). "(Brewer is) A naturally gifted player with a beautiful, warm tone and a melodic penchant, his playing is eminently pleasing…" penned ...
