As Noah Georgeson has been a key associate of both Joanna Newsom and Devendra Banhart, it's no surprise that his debut solo album is eccentric singer/songwriter folk-rock, with the accent on the folk rather than the rock. Fortunately, it's not explicitly reminiscent of either Newsom or Banhart, though there are similarities in the vibe. Instead, it's slightly wacked out Americana, rather in the mold of a 21st century Lee Hazlewood -- a legendary cult figure to whom Georgeson's wavering cowboy-operatic vocal style will inevitably draw comparisons. Like Hazlewood, Georgeson decorates wistful, plaintive folky songs with grandiose instrumentation and an unsettlingly brooding mix of the down-home and the unfathomably strange. Georgeson's arrangements certainly have more of an alternative rock (and less of a standard pop) cast, however, whether it's tinkling percussion, shaky organ, or ghostly synthetic strains. Find Shelter is an interesting and idiosyncratic maiden effort, though it's unlikely to find as large an audience as Banhart and Newsom have, owing to both the narrowness of Georgeson's vocal range and the inscrutability of his songwriting. ~ Richie Unterberger
Noah Georgeson is perhaps best known as a producer for Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart, and Bert Jansch, though he is also a member of Banhart's touring band. Find Shelter was recorded in San Francisco and Nevada City between 1999 and 2003. From the AutuMojo (Publisher) (p.104) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "The songs are reflective, minor key and inward-looking -- as moodily affecting as Mark Lanegan's soul searching." Find Shelter
$12.89 The 15-piece Cuban institution led by bassist Juan Formell recorded this album of new material direct to DAT live, although it's hard to tell if it was an actual gig, or a no-second-chance-with-overdubs affair, in the Salon Rosado de La Tropical studio before a select audience. It does mark the debut of Samuel Formell on drums, replacing the veteran Jose L. Quintana, and it's an eminently solid outing that won't disappoint fans.
Los Van Van plays modern Cuban pop music built around structured songs, tight arrangements centered on the vocals, and loads of riffs, melodies, and hooks laid-over choppy, staggered rhythms that maintain a persistent forward thrust. Between violins for the classic charanga sound, and trombones to kick in the son variations, the band has a built-in capacity for variety, and a three-person singing squad doesn't hurt on that score, either.
More than anything, there's a great pop sensibility at play here because something always seem to hook you at some point in almost every song. It doesn't necessarily last the whole song, and it doesn't matter if Cuban music is a favorite genre or not, but something gets in there and grabs hold. "Qué Sorpresa! (Voy A Publicar Tu Foto En La Prensa)" -- that's ("Surprise! I'm Going To Publish Your Photo In The Newspaper") -- apparently was a huge hit on the island for months, but it's hard to figure out why until the tabloid era-savvy chorus kicks in and locks down.
So the music's strong and arranged with plenty of veteran savvy, but another key to Los Van Van's 25-year run of Cuban success is that Formell and company have a good handle on the Cuban everyman/woman experience in their lyrics. The title of "Soy Normal, Natural" doesn't need any translation, and the unpretentious, no star-tripper stance is reflected in the direct, down-to-earth lyrics throughout the disc. "Qué Sorpresa" is built on a lover's revenge theme that's certainly universal, and blues fans might note ...

| | Cork Speed Of Thought CD (1999)
Find Shelter
$9.55 Eric Schenkman left the Spin Doctors following the dismal performance of their second album Turn It Upside Down in 1994. He drifted for a few years, playing the occasional session, before returning in the pan-generation supergroup Cork in 1995. Essentially, Cork is simply Schenkman and former Mountain drummer Corky Laing, but for much of their debut album Speed of Thought, they're joined by bassist Noel Redding of the Jimi Hendrix Experience; whenever he doesn't appear, Schenkman handles the four strings. Cork apply jam band mentality to '70s hard rock. They turn up the volume, strengthen the attack, and make it blusey, while still concentrating on loose-limbed jams. The results are mixed, to say the least. There's little question that the ...
| | Black 47 Bittersweet Sixteen CD (2006)
Find Shelter
$14.15 Black 47 and Gadfly Records were faced with a challenge in compiling a retrospective on the band, since, over the first 16 years of their existence, in addition to their self-released and Gadfly discs, Black 47 made recordings for three other companies -- two of them subsidiaries of major labels -- from which the music could not be licensed. The solution, of course, was to use other versions of some of the songs in question, and "to the rescue," as annotator and bandleader Larry Kirwan puts it, came disc jockey Vin Scelsa, "who provided a long lost live studio recording considered by many stronger than our actual CD performances." That made available six songs originally heard on out of print major-label albums like Home of the Brave and Green Suede Shoes. Then there are four tracks drawn from the Gadfly records; an early version of the song "Home of the Brave"; a previously unreleased early mix of "Funky Ceili"; and four previously unrecorded songs -- a cover of Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth," the Kirwan original "Southside Chicago Waltz," a cover of Brendan Behan's "Patriot Game," and an a cappella rendition of union organizer Joe Hill's poem "Joe Hill's Last Will." Kirwan provides his own assessment of the result: "The selection is in no sense definitive," he admits, "but provides a serviceable introduction for a novice, with enough unreleased tunes, hard to find covers, and current live segues to catch the attention of a veteran." This is fair enough, but it's also worth noting that the contractual restrictions have skewed things somewhat. Since the band has never had any hits, any choice of its best or even most representative material is necessarily subjective, but most "veterans" would find it odd for a Black 47 compilation not to include ...
