It's hard not to hear the hum: although the third album by experimental Portland collective Mise en Abyme doesn't contain a literal drone underpinning all the songs à la Camille's Le Fil, there's a sense throughout Do You Hear the Hum of a just barely audible electronic murmur. This is handy because there are very few other clear through-lines on Do You Hear the Hum, one of those albums that makes a point of being as eclectic as possible, treating its whiplash-inducing tonal shifts between songs as a virtue. So, for example, the album moves from the lulling, sparse electronica of "The Riot" into the harsh, jerky, megaphone-vocal "The Blinds," which then shades into "Tourist," a blend of High Llamas-style shimmer and the dark neo-noir atmosphere of Barry Adamson's recent work. Alternating between passages of abrasive noise and lyrical beauty, Do You Hear the Hum is a deliberately fractured but often compelling listen. ~ Stewart Mason

$15.89 Roger Daltrey called on a wider circle of friends for his third album and came up with a more varied collection of songs, from Steve Gibbons' raucous title track to ex-Zombie Colin Blunstone's country-styled "Single Man's Dilemma." Daltrey also co-wrote three songs with producers David Courtney and Tony Meehan, and Beatle completists should note that Paul McCartney contributed a new song, "Giddy." But the best selections were Andy Pratt's "Avenging Annie," a stirring story-song ...
| | Faithbomb Bleed CD (2008)
Do You Hear The Hum songs
$31.65 REVIEWS OF FAITHBOMB'S "BLEED" CD:NEW RENAISSANCE MESSAGE BOARD by iwarrior SEPT 02 Before I opine on this disc, I'll have to admit to being somewhat of a novice and a skeptic when it comes to Christian metal. Maybe it's the preachiness or the fact that many seem to merely imitate other secular, and more successful(commercially as well as creatively)bands. One thing I can tell you is that Faithbomb dodge those pitfalls by finding inspiration in Entombed, Fu Manchu, and Down and adding an idealistic vibe to cultivate their own inviting garden of sound.Lead-off track "I Won't" takes Entombed's "Like This With The Devil", empties the Black Talon bullets inside, and replaces them with rubber ones. That may sound like a put-down, but nothing could be further from the truth as throughout much of the record, Faithbomb find strength in the nihilism of the Gothenburg sound only to turn it on its ear in their own way. As I alluded to before, a heavy doom influence is prevalent also. This influence comes to the surface especially well on tracks 3 and 4. "Carry Me To Heaven" and "The Devil And Me" each wringing out one-hundred years of pain, blues, and agony with their Sabbatherian riffs. The band doesn't mind being eclectic in the vocals department either, as the band see-saws between a borderline grind bark, and a clean croon with a Hetfieldian growl acting as an effective fulcrum. I commend the bravery of this disc. Instead of telling you what to believe or else, Faithbomb just state their beliefs via power chords for the listener to ponder, almost saying "If you're with us cool, if you're not, so be it". Long-haired hell-raisers fear not this disc, as these guys make Stryper look like a bunch of crass Jimmy Swaggarts. If that isn't a recommendation, I don't know what is. NEW RENAISSANCE MESSAGE BOARD by iwarrior SEPT 02Ah. There's that tingly feeling again. The only type of tingly feeling that comes when one hears some really, really good slamming groovetacular metal. That's right. I said "groovetacular". How groovetacular? Faithbomb's 'Bleed', in my humble opinion, ranks up there with Eternal Decision, Oil, Eloi and Godsmack. Heavy, heavy, heavy. The production is superb, the playing is tight, and the sonics of this disc just grab you by the adams apple and won't let go. Now, the lyrics are quite Christian, and in that I mean intelligent and uplifting at times, and then dark ...
| | Terry Kitchen Summer To Snowflakes CD (2009)
Do You Hear The Hum album
$14.79 Boston singer/songwriter Terry Kitchen's new CD 'Summer to Snowflakes' is an intimate and personal document, both in its songwriting and how it was recorded, that nonetheless captures and reflects universal feelings, archetypal stories, and up to the minute world events. From the gentle guitar arpeggios and 'citronella candle' that open "Listening to Summer" to the graceful piano and winter funeral scene that close "Snowflakes," the album highlights Kitchen's detailed, poignant songwriting, understated but expressive singing, and deft guitar fingerings.Between those opening and closing songs are a dozen tracks ranging from wry observation and social commentary ("Cherokee Run," which compares boom and bust development to the land runs of the 1890s, "Why Do I Hate My Very Nice Life?" about the hollowness of material success), to stories of personal courage and growth ("Rainbow (in the Middle of the Night)," based on a pivotal scene from Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, and "Be a Man About It," ...
