Released in late 2006, this 23rd installment of NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL MUSIC! leans heavily toward R&B and hip-hop, featuring artists such as Nelly Furtado (the percussive, synth-pop-tinged "Promiscuous"), Kelis (the sassy, frenetic "Bossy"), and Chingy (the shuffling "When You're Mad"). Those looking for rock tunes are offered a few tracks, most notably OK Go's power-pop hit "Here It Goes Again," while country fans have to make due with only one selection, Kenny Chesney's amiable "Summertime." Now That's What I Call Music! 23
$13.05 The problem with Slither is that it is not challenging. The music is heavy and well played, a synthesis between the band's early-'90s hardcore roots and the "new metal" of Korn and the ...

| | Rhinoceros CD (1968)
Now That's What I Call Music! 23
$11.59 The product of producer Paul Rothchild, Rhinoceros were conceived, planned, and executed as a "supergroup." This was the group's raison d'ętre and, ultimately, its downfall. Pieced together after a marathon series of jams at the producer's house in the spring of 1968, Rhinoceros were intended to be the heaviest band of the time. Rothchild and Elektra came very, very close. With former members of Iron Butterfly (Danny Weis, guitar), the Daily Flash, and Buffalo Springfield (Doug Hastings, guitar), as well as some highly respected studio aces such as Billy Mundi on drums, they formed a very good band indeed, but not really a group. Fortunately, ...

| | Dan Bern My Country II CD (2004) Extended Play
Now That's What I Call Music! 23
$5.95 Folkie Dan Bern subtitling his My Country II "Music to beat Bush by" places him firmly to the left in the debate surrounding the 2004 presidential election. But Bern is a strong songwriter, and he emphasizes My Country II's music over its message. He's definitely not a fan of 43, but there's more on Bern's mind than regime change. Dylan meets Costello in the bashed-out sonics of "Tyranny," and the track's world-weariness comes from issues larger than one administration. Likewise, "After the Parade" is an everysoldier's lament, suggestive of Eric Bogle's powerfully sad "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda." These tracks are certainly relevant to My Country's central theme. But they make the album about more than just one man, even if Bern saves his real ire for Mr. Bush. "President" is a funny folk ramble personifying W's first 100 days, while the title track takes issue with conservatives' demonizing of dissenting opinion. Best might be the decidedly unsubtle "Bush Must Be Defeated." His acoustic guitar twining over downcast electronic percussion, Bern rhymes about ...

His new CD, ...
