| | James Blunt Back To Bedlam CD James Blunt Discography of CDs
James Blunt is a former Royal Air Force soldier who saw active combat during the NATO mission in Kosovo, an experience detailed in his debut album's harrowing closer, "No Bravery." Judging from the rest of BACK TO BEDLAM, he's also in the market to become either a one-man Coldplay or a more commercially acceptable version of Elliott Smith. A collection of midtempo ballads based around Blunt's acoustic guitar and piano and his high, reedy voice, BACK TO BEDLAM is tailor made for a generation of sensitive college girls and their frat-boy boyfriends. Blunt shares Smith's knack for pretty mopery and self-destructive tendencies (several songs, most obviously the opening "High," tacitly romanticize drug use), as well as Coldplay's talent for decorating simple melodies with effective production tricks. Tracks like the UK smash "You're Beautiful" and "Goodbye My Lover" are backhanded anti-love songs that suggest Elvis Costello's lyrical wit, and add a little bite to this otherwise radio-ready set of tunes.

CMJ (p.4) - "Blunt's writing is heartfelt and wrapped in the sort of sugary strums that make couples gaze at each other longingly." James Blunt Back To Bedlam Songs Back To Bedlam Review

Purchase Back To Bedlam CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Joe Bonamassa So, It's Like That CD (2002)
Back To Bedlam album
$12.35 A wizard, and a true guitar star, Joe Bonamassa was bending an axe's six strings before he could legally drive. Inspired by classic blues aces Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, and B.B. King, Bonmassa yearned to tell stories sad but true on the guitar. Released in 2002, SO, IT'S LIKE THAT is his second disc, and it provides hints of the heights he'd later hit. Bonamassa is at his best when stretching out, and he doesn't get to do that quite enough here. Still, THAT is good for Bonamassa fans who ...
| | Eric Tingstad Acoustic Elegance: Ultimate Collection CDs (2003)
Back To Bedlam CD music
$12.49 Acoustic guitarist Eric Tingstad has been working with English horn and oboe player Rumbel since 1985 for the Narada label, and a wide array of their work is collected on this generous 2-program collection. Styles range from Celtic to Spanish to rural Americana, and often touch on the Middle Eastern and exotic in flavor (as in the almost Arabian lilt to "La Fogota"). Conjuring warm emotions and memories, these tracks are all amazing, with the gorgeous and evocative "Empire Builder" being a true highlight. Tingstad's guitar work is so warm and inviting and Rumbel's English horn so sweet and radiant it feels like the sun is shining no matter where one may be listening. "Talk of Angels" opens with a lilting duet of piano and acoustic guitar whispering to each other in sad farewell, until Rumbel comes in like a healing angel. Even fans who already have their Grammy-winning ACOUSTIC GARDEN (from which several of these tracks originate) will want to take the plunge on this, as the discs include tracks culled ...

| | Andreas Vollenweider Midnight Clear CD (2006)
Back To Bedlam CD music
$13.65 The legendary, Grammy Award-winning harpist takes some truly blessed left turns on what could have been just another pedestrian new age Christmas collection. Rather than do the umpteenth version of "White Christmas," Andreas Vollenweider applies his plucky, ethereal style to unique, traditional, and little heard Old World tunes like "The Coventry Carol" (which he jazzes up with bamboo flute and seductive sax), "The Wexford Carol," "The Yorkshire Wassail" (which is the source of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen") and "Carol of the Drum." His beautiful harp tones are perfect fits for these classical instruments, but he has enough pop sensibilities to add just the right touch of soul and groove to them. Vollenweider's other ace here is longtime friend Carly Simon, who lends her warm and familiar voice to an offbeat arrangement of the title track and several romantic, inspirational originals. Nothing is wrong with overtly commercial new age-oriented holiday collections like the beautiful albums Jim Brickman has done, but Vollenweider deserves kudos for digging deeper into history and finding ...

| | Ian Dury Do It Yourself CDs (1979) (Import) Deluxe Edition; United Kingdom
Back To Bedlam songs
$22.65 This 1998 reissue contains 7 bonus tracks not on the original release.
On Ian Dury's second outing with the Blockheads, the strangely charismatic British singer continues to spout witty narratives in his trademark Cockney accent over a musical backdrop that largely eschews punk in favor of a disco vibe. Of course, this being the every-quirky Dury, the dance-floor feel on this 1979 record is loose and pub-oriented, rather than slick and club-ready. Despite the New Wave trappings, Dury still sounds like a surly traveling salesman from a long-lost era, especially when he's spewing out insults, as on the silly, swaggering "Uneasy Sunny Day Hotsy Totsy." In addition to jaunty tracks such as "Inbetweenies," the 1998 remastered reissue of DO IT YOURSELF features a handful of classic Dury singles as bonus tracks, most notably the cheeky "Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick" and the whimsical "Reasons to Be Cheerful, Part 3," making this, along with NEW BOOTS AND PANTIES, an essential disc for any respectable Dury fan.
'Do It Yourself', issued in May 1979, was Dury's first album with the full line-up of The Blockheads, who brought the live tightness and excitement developed after a year on the road into the studio. It reached # 2 in the album chart, spending four months in the listings. This slipcased 2 CD edition features three fabulous non-album singles, Ian Dury's most successful releases: 'What A Waste' (a # 9 hit), 'Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick' (# 1) and 'Reasons To Be Cheerful, Part 3' (# 3). Also featured on the 16 track bonus disc are the legendary b-side 'There Ain't Half Been Some Clever Bastards' and the 6:40 12' version of 'Reasons...', along with the Dury and The Blockheads' complete set at Leicester University during the Live Stiffs tour of autumn 1977 (four tracks previously unreleased) and several unreleased demos. Edsel 2004.
